The definitive tome on the Bauhaus and a work of art in itself

The Bauhaus was the defining birthplace of modernism, and one that continues to influence artistic and aesthetic direction today.

This volume is comprehensive, and is in itselt, as an object that reflects Bauhaus sensibility - a reflection of the movement.

I have been seeking a copy off an on for over 30 years but they are hard to come by - I have only seen one or two (hardcover) ones for sale in that time. The copy I have purchased is second hand but in fine condition - including the beautifully articulated slipcase.

One of the great beneifts of the internet, and in particular, when it comes to books, is Amazon's (and a few other websites) functionality in bringing together buyers and sellers for out of print, and relatively rare books, still at affordable prices.

I purchased my copy from the US and had it delivered to Australia, for a third of the cover price the book was, 30 years ago.

Even ignoring inflacon, this is surely a bargain.

Please note that my comments refer to the hardcover version only, The later produced softcover, is just a book, in comparison.

A timeless classic it enjoys pride of place in my personal library.

A great deal of information, focused on individuals and their contributions to the Bauhaus. ALL pages are in black and white, which is always a great disappointment when reading about art, design or architecture. Considering this production shortcoming, the book is overpriced. Its written content, very useful and thorough.

About the Author
Known by his simple and austere lifestyle, Fethullah Gulen, affectionately called Hodjaefendi, is a scholar of extraordinary proportions. This man for all seasons was born in Erzurum, eastern Turkey, in 1941. Upon graduation from a private divinity school in Erzurum, he obtained his license and began to preach and teach about the importance of understanding and tolerance. His social reform efforts have made him one of Turkey's most well-known and respected public figures during the 1960s. Though simple in outward appearance, he is original in thought and action. He embraces all humanity, and is deeply averse to unbelief, injustice, and deviation. His belief and feelings are profound, and his ideas and approach to problems are both wise and rational. A living model of love, ardor, and feeling, he is extraordinarily balanced in his thoughts, acts, and treatment of matters. Turkish intellectuals and scholars acknowledge, either tacitly or explicitly, that he is one of the most serious and important thinkers and writers, and among the wisest activists of twentieth-century Turkey or even of the Muslim world. But such accolades of his leadership of a new Islamic intellectual, social, and spiritual revival—a revival with the potential to embrace great areas of the world—do not deter him from striving to be no more than a humble servant of God and a friend to all. Desire for fame is the same as show and ostentation, a "poisonous honey" that extinguishes the heart's spiritual liveliness, is one of the golden rules he follows. Gulen has spent his adult life voicing the cries and laments, as well as the beliefs and aspirations, of Muslims in particular and of humanity in general. He bears his own sorrows, but those of others crush him. He feels each blow delivered at humanity to be delivered first at his own heart. He feels himself so deeply and inwardly connected to creation that once he said: "Whenever I see a leaf fall from its branch in autumn, I feel as much pain as if my arm had been amputated."

is beautifully written and perfect for those interested in theology

Fethullah Gülen, the leader behind the Hizmet movement, recently wrote a biographical account of the Prophet Muhammad’s life and spiritual journey, as well as the characteristics of prophets throughout time. This project, titled Messenger of God, is beautifully written and perfect for those interested in theology, history, and Islam’s role in both. As an American non-Muslim, I was unaware of many of the iconic moments in the Prophet Muhammad’s life, such as his encounter with the Christian monk Bahira, his exemplary relationship with his first wife Khadija, his role as a teacher to those he encountered, and his confrontations with nonbelievers in Medina. However, I feel that I have as basic an understanding as a non-Muslim could have because of the fine details that Gülen paid in every paragraph he wrote. Every paragraph was meticulously written with a clear intention. In some parts of the book, Gülen simply wanted to convey his love and adoration for the Prophet. In others, he wanted to explain the aspects of Islam that are frequently misunderstood, such as jihad and polygamy. Gülen’s tone was so profound to me that I mentioned it to my mother, explaining that I found his book both informative and sincere. I would highly recommend the book to anyone who’s curious about Islam and the Prophet Muhammad, or seeks a better understanding of either.

Written by the famous Turkish humanist Fethullah Gulen- its a study of the Prophets life, of his companions, and of Prophethood in general. It is a long work- a joining of two volumes. All in all, it is a good book, a great deal of interesting information, although sometimes it gets a quite gushy and sentimental- using images of flowers, gardens, jewels, etc- although the style is generally elegant. The best parts were Military Dimensions of the Prophet's life (which bring to the front how incredible his military skills and planning), and Other Dimensions of his Prophethood (which illumine other aspects, such as his mercy, generosity, spirituality with clear examples). The Section on the Companions and Successors was interesting, showing how the early Muslim community was seriously and intensely set on scholarship concerning what the Prophet had transmitted. A good book, but unlike Martin Lings's famous biography and Qadi Iyad's Shifa, it may not be one I'll come back to.

Icons & Iconoclasts

Disclaimer! :) I am currently Chief Communications Officer at DDB, one of the agencies featured in Tungate's effort. But let me say that I would have enjoyed this history even if my pay stub came from somewhere else. It is more a history of the icons and iconoclasts that established the profession while building enduring businesses whose influence is undisputed. As Tungate states, "In roughly chronological order, it endeavours to cover the most famous agencies, the best-known personalities, and the most compelling themes." At the very least the book will help you sort out the agency acronyms rife in the industry: DDB, JWT, TBWA, Y&R, BBDO - comedian Fred Allen famously observed that the name BBDO sounded like "a steamer trunk falling down a flight of stairs".

Given it was penned in 2007, aspects have already become dated given the global recession, the rise of social media, consumer sophistication and control, and many other factors that the industry is both leading and responding to. And perhaps that was the most valuable insight in reading the book, the communications and advertising industry has always faced incredible business and market challenges. Some of the issues that have been around historically are still encountered today: boutiques versus networks, client conflicts, mercurial creatives, and return on investment which may be endemic and the cost of doing business.

The book really comes alive in its coverage of the greats who live up to the observation that "creative organizations are led by formidable individuals", they include:

- John E. Powers, described by Advertising Age as "the father of creative advertising"

- Albert Lasker who developed a "copywriting school" and is the subject of the recent book, "The Man Who Sold America: The Amazing (but True!) Story of Albert D. Lasker and the Creation of the Advertising Century"

- Rosser Reeves, the originator and proponent of the Unique Selling Proposition

- J. Walter Thompson, "The Commodore", who created the account executive role and more

- David Ogilvy, who said, `when Fortune wrote an article about me and titled it "Is David Ogilvy a genius?" I asked my lawyer to sue the editor for the question mark'

- Bill Bernbach, the creative revolutionary who wrote a famous letter to his one-time bosses at Grey. `I'm worried that we're going to worship techniques instead of substance...There are a lot of great technicians in advertising...But there's little rub. Advertising is fundamentally persuasion and persuasion happens to be not a science, but an art...Let us blaze new trails. Let us prove to the world that good taste, good art, good writing can be good selling.' He took that zeal and formed DDB

- Leo Burnett, with his trademark pencils and apples brought Tony the Tiger, the Jolly Green Giant and the Pillsbury Doughboy to the world

Tungate covers the world with the Saatchi saga, BBH, Euro RSCG, and the giant Dentsu. Also illuminating is the birth of Omnicom (orchestrated brilliantly by Keith Reinhard and Allen Rosenshine) and the other large holding companies like WPP and Publicis that collectively house so many great companies brought to life in this history. Great campaigns, brands, and ideas are here too and spark my only criticism in that they are not covered in the detail necessary to give them justice.

The author signs off with prescience in 2007, "What makes advertising so fascinating right now is that nobody really knows how it will evolve. Many of the agencies described in these pages can still be looked upon as role models; others are museum pieces. Advertising's future will not resemble its past. Experts are busy tracking increasingly slippery consumers and mapping their behavior, but their findings always come with a question mark attached. For sure there will be mobile phones and the internet and screens everywhere, but how will these intersect and interact? The picture is far from clear. The word `communication' covers such a vast territory that it almost defies definition. Psychologists, sociologists, anthropologists, musicologists, technology wizards and gaming enthusiasts ...any or all of them might have a role to play at a modern agency."

Ad Land is a fun and fast read that captures a still incredibly young industry.

BETTER THAN I EXPECTED

As a recovering adman, I was pleasantly surprised by the scope of this book. Unlike everything else I've seen, it actually does attempt to hit the highlights of advertising agencies world wide. Usually these types of books wind up being heavily about only one nation or thinly veiled portfolios of the adfolks or agencies that wrote or sponsored them. This guy seems to be more of a real journalist. Even though biased toward the industry, he maintains a less boosteristic (not a word? It is now) approach.

My only complain is because I bought the book used, I didn't get the dust jacket with it. I run a blog called "Buy The Cover" and I like the simple boldness of the cover - even though I think a better title would have been "Ad World".

Great instructions for the novice! I have never painted with oils in my life, but bought this book and got the nerve to give it a try. My first attempt turned out very nice and even professional looking! I painted the "Rub-a-dub Pup" Very cute and not difficult! I can't wait to try another "Harris Creature" DON"T BE PUT OFF BY THE BEAUTY OF THE COVER PICTURE! Peggy Harris' technique and easy to follow instructions make anything simple and fun. (Not to mention very sastifying!) Also, she uses many household items that cut down on purchasing many expensive "artsy" items! Give this one a try; I don't see how anyone who does so can fail! Have fun & good luck, PS My husband said this FIRST TRY is actually good enough to sell in an arts & craft show!
