John P. McKay (Ph.D., University of California, Berkeley) is professor emeritus at the University of Illinois. He has written or edited numerous works, including the Herbert Baxter Adams Prize-winning book Pioneers for Profit: Foreign Entrepreneurship and Russian Industrialization, 1885-1913.

Patricia B. Ebrey (Ph.D., Columbia University), Professor of History at the University of Washington in Seattle, specializes in China. She has published numerous journal articles and The Cambridge Illustrated History of China, as well as numerous monographs. In 2010 she won the Shimada Prize for outstanding work of East Asian Art History for Accumulating Culture: The Collections of Emperor Huizong. Roger B. Beck (Ph.D., Indiana University) is Distinguished Professor of African and twentieth-century world history at Eastern Illinois University. His publications include The History of South Africa, a translation of P. J. van der Merwe's The Migrant Farmer in the History of the Cape Colony, 1657-1842, and more than a hundred articles, book chapters, and reviews.He is a former treasurer and Executive Council member of the World History Association.Merry E. Wiesner-Hanks (Ph.D., University of Wisconsin-Madison) taught first at Augustana College in Illinois, and since 1985 at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, where she is currently UWM Distinguished Professor in the department of history. She is the coeditor of the Sixteenth Century Journal and the author or editor of more than twenty books, most recently The Marvelous Hairy Girls: The Gonzales Sisters and Their Worlds and Gender in History. She is the former Chief Reader for Advanced Placement World History.Jerry Davila (Ph.D., Brown University) is Jorge Paulo Lemann professor of Brazilian History at the University of Illinois. If you want your Christian beliefs validated in a history ...

If you want your Christian beliefs validated in a history book, this is the textbook for you. If you want actual history, look somewhere else. A history book that sidesteps evolution and doesn't dare mention Darwin and Linnaeus on the chapter on evolution gave me cause for concern. Then upon seeing a bible verse on Jacob and his spotted sheep used as an example of artificial selection just made me cringe. I may drop this class as it has lost all credibility in my eyes.

I had to purchase this textbook for a college course I was taking. I really enjoyed this textbook better than the World Societies textbook (hands down). This textbook has subtitles for each section for each civilization and it makes for an easy read.

It was on a 17th of a month I no longer remember that the civil court pronounced the divorce between Maxime Aubry, artist, and Pauline Mutel, his wife. It was again upon a 17th, the 17th of October, 1907, that I was found murdered by an unknown hand, in the city of Dieppe, at the end of the Quay Henri IV. And once more, by a providential chance, it was on the 17th of last month that I again gave my name to Pauline Mutel, my divorced wife!

About the Author

Ruben Guzman is a United States Swimming (USS) coach for age-group swimmers. He has coached swimming for over 35 years at the summer recreational, high school, collegiate, and competitive year-round USS levels.

Over the years, Guzman’s teams have won numerous championships, and dozens of his swimmers have gone on to compete at the collegiate level. His athletes have advanced to nationals and Olympic trials. Recognized worldwide as an expert in stroke technique, Guzman served as the stroke specialist for the California Capital Aquatics team and worked closely with retired head coach Mike Hastings, an assistant coach on the 1992 U.S. Olympic team.

In 2008, what was to be his final year of coaching at the high school level, Guzman’s swim team at Christian Brothers High School (Sacramento, California) qualified 22 of its 33 swimmers for the state championships. Ever the teacher, in 2016, Guzman came out of retirement to coach his son’s high school team. He continues to conduct clinics and trainings for swim teams and coaches.

Guzman holds a bachelor’s degree in biological sciences from California Lutheran University and a master’s degree in public health from UCLA, specializing in behavioral sciences and health promotion.

In addition to his swimming expertise, Guzman is author of the book Evolving Health and is a professional speaker and consultant specializing in leadership development, communication, health promotion, and productivity for leaders and their organizations.

This is the story of the genocide in Rwanda in all its power and horror expressed by the people who experienced it - Rwandans themselves. Therefore, it is the most important of all of the books on the subject. The others are also important and some may be more eloquent as literature, but none match Genocide in Rwanda for sheer unvarnished and unfiltered honesty and integrity. The book also provides an invaluable chronology of Rwanda that illuminates a vital perspective on the political and tribal conditions that precipitated the killing.

Invaluable addition to literature on the Rwandan genocide

For anyone with an already-primed interest in the terrible events of 1994 in Rwanda, this book is tremendously valuable.
It seeks to filter as little as possible the views of Rwandans. There are, in this book, some deeply disturbing survivor's accounts of the genocide, transcribed, unvarnished, from their own testimony. It is all the more powerful for the directness of its expression.
Most valuable to me was the material explaining the colonial origins of the division between Tutsis and Hutus. It is extraordinary to me that when Rwanda and Burundi were "assigned" to Germany in the 1880s, no European had even set foot in those lands. When they came, their pursuit of control caused divisions where previously - on this evidence - none had existed. Blame for the genocide must be seated in the Belgian colonial rulers in general (they took over after 1916), and the missionary churches in particular. This book explains why.
Rwanda, more than any other event since WW2, makes us consider the question put eloquently here by one of the witnesses: what is humanity? Who is included? Who is left out? For the world not to have acted effectively to have prevented the Rwandan cataclysm stands to its shame. Kofi Annan has admitted as much, but the real fault lies with everyone and we should all be ashamed.
The compilers of this book have acted bravely in including an apologia from the authors of the genocide. We hear their voices. We must be sickened by them. We must acknowledge that we were warned; the voices existed long before the worst of the genocide began.
Knowing what we know about the world, would we prevent it next time? Be honest now; would we?

An account of the Rwandan genocide by Rwandans.

This interesting historic document allows the often ignored voice of the Rwandan people to be heard. Witness testimony is horrifyingly poignant when the victim is made known so clearly to the reader. It is as if I could see their faces and feel their fears. I have read many reference works on the genocide in Rwanda but none so accurately put me in the shoes of the victims. The killers are also represented, as are the international community and their failures, the actions of the church, the former government, the current government and members of the Rwandan Patriotic Army. This book really made me feel for the writers, the Rwandans themselves who have suffered so much through the failings of the international community.
