Lysistrata is one of the few surviving plays written by Aristophanes. Originally performed in classical Athens in 411 BC, it is a comic account of one woman's extraordinary mission to end The Peloponnesian War. Lysistrata persuades the women of Greece to withhold sexual privileges from their husbands and lovers as a means of forcing the men to negotiate peace — a strategy, however, that inflames the battle between the sexes. The play is notable for being an early expos� of sexual relations in a male-dominated society. The dramatic structure represents a shift away from the conventions of Old Comedy, a trend typical of the author's career. It was produced in the same year as Thesmophoriazusae, another play with a focus on gender-based issues, just two years after Athens' catastrophic defeat in the Sicilian Expedition.

Pick your translation carefully

Having read several different translations of Lysistrata, I can report that the one you select may make all the difference in your opinion of this early comedy. Roche's translation is very vulgar but has good footnotes: get ready for cockney Spartans, however. Jack Lindsay's translation, done in 1925 (included in the Bantam edition of Aristophanes) seems to be overly literary in comparison to the original but lacks notes. It reads well, though sounds a little old-fashioned. The bawdry is present but made less direct; in this one the Spartan dialect is Scottish.

I found Parker's translation to be the least satisfactory. The "hillbilly" dialect he gives the Spartans is painfully overdone,not to mention inaccurate, and the speeches are awkward and pedestrian. An excellent edition overall is Alan H. Sommerstein's in the Penguin Classic "Aristophanes: Lysistrata and Other Plays." The introduction and notes are extremely informative, and the translation itself strikes the right note to represent Aristophanes' style in English. (Once again, though, the Spartans are Scots.)

But perhaps the best choice is Sarah Ruden's 2003 edition. Her dialogue is unusually funny without straying too far from the original. Added value comes from her four very readable essays on Greek democracy, warfare, women, and comedy. It's also printed on quality paper and comes with a great cover!

Make love, not war!

"Lysistrata," the play by Aristophanes, has been published in an anonymous translation as part of the Dover Thrift Editions series. The opening commentary on the text notes that this play dates back to 411 BCE. Aristophanes tells the story of his title character, an Athenian woman who, weary of war, conceives a bold plan: she enlists the women of Greece to refuse to have sex with their men until the men make peace.
The plot of this play is thus quite simple, but it is marvelously handled by the author. The play is a rich and effective mix of slapstick antics, bawdy wordplay, and biting sociopolitical commentary. At the center of this enjoyable play is the commanding figure of Lysistrata. Articulate and resolute, she is truly one of the great characters of world drama; she's a woman with a bold vision.
Although it is a funny comedy, "Lysistrata" does deal with some serious issues that remain relevant after all these centuries. Recommended as a companion text: "Necessary Targets," a play by Eve Ensler. This non-comedic drama also deals with the issue of women in a country at war.

Very tasty indeed!

This is an absolutely great little novella from the lovely Rebecca Black ....and her first!

Cooking has always been a huge part of Ellies life and something she finds great comfort in, so when she was given the opportunity of working as a chef at E'Toile, she jumped at the chance. Nate and Jack were her best friends and her bosses - and both as hot as hell, so she tried hard to ignore the constant lucid thoughts running through her head. Besides, she had been celibate for the whole year she'd worked there and she could handle it ....or so she thought! Many a day she'd spend lusting after her bosses, watching how they moved and imagining the fun she could have with both of them. Little did she realise that both Jack and Nate were fighting similar feelings, only now they felt it was time to act on them. They approach Ellie and offer her a proposition, one which would hopefully satisfy all three of their needs, but would Ellie go for it?

I have to say that this only took me a few hours to read as I was gripped almost from the off. Rebecca has a great writing style and expertly draws the reader in. Although this is only a short novella, the characters are cleverly brought to life and you're given real understanding of their situation. I found myself really warming to Ellie and it was great having a little background knowledge to better understand her feelings. The sex scenes are sensual yet dirty which I absolutely loved. Rebecca, I applaud you on making me gasp ...it's not an easy thing to do but hey, you managed it!
Overall a great read and one that will make you squirm on the edge of your seat! I look forward to reading more from Rebecca Black with great anticipation.

The Heat is on...!

Having read Rebecca's short stories online I was excited to learn that she was writing a novella.

Ellie works with Nate & Jack in the restaurant business - their working relationship is perfect. The trouble is that after working side by side for over a year Ellie has a case of the hots for Jack and Nate. What can be worse that lusting after one guy? Yep, you guessed it, lusting after his best mate too! Ellie does not want to ruin their friendship so when Nate & Jack make a proposal both professionally and personally she freaks.

Will she take the guys up on their offer? Will it affect her working relationship with them?

Rebecca has a great writing style and given I read a lot in the erotic romance genre she was able to make me blush (no mean feat I must add!!)

I was very honoured to be asked to beta read for her and whole heartedly recommend Rebecca Black to all and sundry. A great new talent and defiantly one to watch.

Naughty but very nice novella.

A spectacular, sexy debut from an author that is now on my 'read anything they write' list!
This novella had me enthralled from the very first page. Ellie is a strong, fiercely independent lady who I instantly warmed to. She works alongside two very hot, successful men who run their own restaurants. Ellie has been lusting over them both for a while but doesn't want to jeopardise her career. Nate and Jack have their own ideas and finally decide that it's time Ellie has a taste of them and vice versa.
The tension between the three is written cleverly and the build up is exquisite torture. The sex is red hot and if, like me, you're a fan of m�nage, you'll be in heaven. When I read at the end, to be continued, I actually bounced with joy!

For those in leadership or studying that subject in college, this book has great information. Although some concepts are not new, they all have been brought together within the pages of this book! Quinn has done a wonderful job of making the Competing Values Framework (CVF) easy to understand. Bravo Zulu!

Great read on epidemics from ancient to modern

Whether you are an armchair epidemiologist or just want a scary read, this book explores 50 different epidemics from 10,000 BC until 2014. Each outbreak includes a summary page and three to five pages of detail - perfect bite-sized chunks for reading a little at a time or doing a longer dive.
The prose is clear for the lay person but technically accurate for those who have a background in microbiology, as I do. It was refreshing to see this balance. It was also entertaining without being lurid.

I was familiar with many of these outbreaks as I've done a lot of reading on them, but Skwarecki provided many new details I didn't know, plus disease outbreaks I had not read about before. I thought each outbreak had just the right amount of information. Often it inspired going to the internet to read more about the period.

This is a book I highly recommend.

A Fascinating Tour of History’s Terrible Epidemics

In 50 short but succinct chapters – each about 4 to 5 pages long - the author guides the reader through various epidemics that have plagued the human race from about 10,000 BCE to the present. In each case, an affected geographical location/country/city is highlighted and the particular disease’s nature, means of spreading, effects on those infected, effects on society and eventual exit are all clearly described.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. Each chapter is self-contained and does not rely on information presented in earlier chapters. Consequently, one can read a chapter or two or more and put the book aside for a while and come back to it later without having to remember anything about what’s been already read. I found this book to be well written in a prose that is clear, lively, accessible, friendly, authoritative and immensely captivating. Although this book can be enjoyed by anyone, I believe that a treat is to be had by those with a penchant for history - particularly for how and when epidemics have occurred and their usually devastating effects.

The main idea behind this book is that just as people have unique personality preferences, we all have unique preferences for what we find satisfying and motivating when it comes to love. Your love language is the way that you most feel loved and cared for. The problem is most people love how they want to be loved, and that doesn't tend to align with how their partner wants to be loved. So, you have to learn to speak your partner's love language. The author also believes that focusing intently on speaking the love languages will rekindle relationships where people don't even seem to like each other anymore.

My only critique is that they didn't focus more on understanding and discussing your emotions. For this you and your partner should read Emotional Intelligence 2.0. It did wonders for my husband and I.

The relationship expert who wrote the book arranges the book into the five love languages, and provides quizzes to help you determine which language you are:

- Words of Affirmation:
If this is your love language, you feel most cared for when your partner is open and expressive in telling you how wonderful they think you are, how much they appreciate you, etc.
Basically, they find ways to remind you that their world is a better place because you are in it.

This would be why a husband who does yard work, dishes, car maintenance, etc. (Acts of Service) is floored when his wife says "You never show me you love me. You never cuddle with me, or caress my hair, or make the first move for sex." (Physical Touch). Or, "Why don't you spend time with me? Why do you work so much?" (Quality Time). And, "Why don't you buy me flowers? Why don't you ever get me cards or balloons...just because?" (Gifts) Or "You never tell me what I mean to you. Why don't you ever share with me what I mean to you, or what my good qualities are?" (Words of Affirmation) But, if her language is primarily Acts of Service, she'll feel so loved and honored because her husband does so many things for her, and thus feels "full" in her love tank.
This may not sound like a big deal, but considering the divorce rate is 50% (as one relationship instance), and so many seem to be unhappy with their primary relationships, the concept of love languages may very well be a signficant factor in understanding self and others, and in relationship growth. Perhaps relationships get rocky or arrive at an impasse because individuals are speaking a different love language than what fills up the "love tank" of the object of their affection...and a result, the recipient doesn't feel loved. It's not that they feel empty and unfufilled because love isn't being given, but because the language "spoken" is not something that registers to the recipient as a form of love.
Chapman further theorizes that we usually have 2 main love languages that fill up our tank. He also says that if a person has a hard time identifying their main love languages, they've either been on empty for so long and are out of touch with their needs, or they have been so filled up by their spouse, that all 5 languages tend to speak to them equally.
A story in the book that illustrates the love tank theory is the "burnt toast syndrome". A woman was sick in bed. Her husband would always bring her burnt toast to her when she was ailing. She was so hurt and offended by this repeated insensitivity and ignorance, that she finally burst into tears one day, and asked him why he did that...and didn't he care? She was floored to hear him say "I'm sorry honey. I had no idea. Burnt toast is my favorite, and I gave you what I would consider my favorite breakfast...burnt toast."
Chapman writes: "When your spouse's emotional love tank is full and he feels secure in your love, the whole world looks right and your spouse will move out to reach his highest potential in life. But when the love tank is empty and he feels used but not loved, the whole world looks dark and he will likely never reach his potential for good in the world."
I recommend this book highly. It could very well be a relationship saver!

Saved my marriage

This book is absolutely incredible. Having serious marital problems, I was desperate for any kind of help. I was about to turn to counseling when I heard about this book. I decided to buy it so that my husband and I could read it together.
Not expecting too much, one lazy morning I suggested to my husband that we lay in bed and begin reading this book out loud to eachother. We read 120 pages that morning! We could not put it down! Both of us shed a lot of tears that morning, this book really hit home.
That morning when we woke up, everything seemed hopeless for us. After reading this book, we had hope that our problems can be resolved. Our attitude toward eachother has greatly changed since we read this book.
Basically this book explains that people feel loved in different ways. For example, my love language is "quality time" and my husband's love language is "personal touch." Without quality time with my husband, I feel unloved... my husband feels unloved when we have a lack of physical contact. Our love languages are so different... before reading this book, I just thought that my husband wanted more sex for selfish reasons. When in reality, personal contact is what he needs to feel loved. Before reading this book, my husband hated when I nagged about spending time together.. but now he realizes that spending time with me is the best way to tell me that he loves me.
Dr. Chapman says in this book that LOVE IS A CHOICE. Find your partner's love language style, then choose to show love to your partner in that way (it's not about what YOU need to feel loved, it's about what YOUR PARTNER needs). I thought that spending quality time with my spouse was the way I can show him I love him. In reality, that's MY love language, not HIS.
Even if your partner does not want to read this book with you, there are ways you can begin to repair your marriage on your own, and before you know it, your partner will begin to reciprocate.
This book is INCREDIBLE. I plan to pass it around my friends and family. Please invest the $12 and read this book, your marriage will never be the same again!
