About the Author
P. W. Singer is a strategist and senior fellow at the New America Foundation, founder of the technology advisory firm NeoLuddite, the author of multiple award-winning books, and a contributing editor at Popular Science. Allan Friedman is a visiting scholar at the Cyber Security Policy Research Institute in the School of Engineering and Applied Sciences at George Washington University, where he works on cybersecurity policy. Another great book from Peter Singer

Dr. Singer's books are always engaging, and this book, co-authored Allan Friedman, continues that tradition.

This book is written to be consumed by any thoughtful reader -- it is not a deep dive in UNIX system administration challenges, it not full of computer acronyms, it does not require an advanced degree in computer science.

This book clearly educates the reader about cybersecurity issues, and then expands upon this discussion to enable the reader to conceptualize the challenges of the subject. A good example of this is their Short History of the Internet, which is a clear and concise and enjoyable read by itself. This history includes, in layman's terms, evolution, funding agencies, control entities, architecture, Al Gore, governance, cryptographic keys, and more. With this foundation the authors then expand into many cybersecurity challenges, like WikiLeaks and a variety of security threats.

I particularly liked the discussions on attribution, cybercrimes, and cyber terrorism -- these are not simple issues, and the authors articulate some of the complexities of attribution that make cybersecurity so difficult.

The authors wrap up the book by defining the Five Key Trends that Affect the Future of Cybersecurity – Cloud Computing, Big Data, Mobile, Cyberspace Demographics, and Internet-of-Things (IoT). These trends all increase the problem space of cybersecurity, and the authors define how these trends will drive an even higher demand for security in our future systems.

With this history, description of threats, frameworks, and trends, the authors truly accomplish their goal of delivering a primer of what one needs to know about cybersecurity and cyberwar.

Balanced and Accessible, but Dry At Times

Not too long ago I read the book @War: The Rise of the Military-Internet Complex by Shane Harris, which was a great book and brought home to me the rising influence of private cybersecurity and cyberwarfare interests over the government's internet policies. Though I enjoyed that book a lot, I must admit that it was relatively biased in its coverage. In contrast, this book is a far more balanced look at the issues of cybersecurity and cyberwar. Co-written by P.W. Singer, who wrote Wired for War: The Robotics Revolution and Conflict in the 21st Century one of my favorite books, this book takes a question and answer approach to the topic. For example, a subsection will say something like "What is cybersecurity?" and the authors will spend the next few pages answering the question. In that way it is also a very accessible book for people as you don't need to read the whole book, but rather find the topic(s) you don't quite understand and read about it. This also helps make the book very balanced as it is more about giving readers an exhaustive look at all issues related to cybersecurity and cyberwar. Yet, this also means that it lacks a narrative drive to it. Though the authors try to make the subject more accessible through pop culture anecdotes and illustrations, it still can read like a reference book. Still, if you are interested in this topic, this is probably the fairest and most exhaustive book out there that is most accessible to the public.

Cybersecurity, the Whole Picture

Like most people I was looking for answers to my personal LAN security issues and picked this book in the hopes of getting a deeper understanding of how to secure my network. But, I got an even better deal instead. This book covers the entire state of cyber security issues from car theft by network interference to Cyberwar.

The issue of network security has become global in scope and there are no political boundaries in Cyberspace. Nothing separates us personally from being raided by a thief whether he be an individual using an electronic jamer to keep your car unlocked or an employee of the Chinese government using commercial routers to collect personal data against you.

The misuse and abuse of Cyberspace is predicated on the natural openness of the design of the Ethernet. Education about the current situation is our primary defense against those who would use this valuable tool against us. And this book does an excellent job of appraising us about the dangers and defenses inherent in this communications medium.

This is not a book about how to setup the network security switches on your operating system. This is the book to tell you what has been happening in the entire world of Cyberspace that can affect you directly. Before you can defend yourself you need to know what the threat really is.

Most of the book is spent covering the current world level security threat complex. With the exception of Denial of Service and RoboLensing attacks, the book gives the reader very good advice on how to deny the attackers effective access to your computer network. The general answer lies here.

As in personal self defense, the answer comes through more effective communication with the security community and application of proper security measures. Reducing your threat cross section by using the approaches detailed in the book will help you to protect your data and your sleep.

Less Romantic heat than a Disney Movie..... NOT A ROMANCE !!!

If your just looking for an interesting story, Like Vampires,Were-Wolves ! Fay and Fairies and the like and don't mind a sweet but deeply clueless h ? ( I mean deeply clueless virgin kinda clueless, like just has a bit ,ore clues at times that Cher from the movie "Clueless") then this might be the story for you.... I kinda really like the story per say but what pisses me off is this being called a " romance" ;( Seriously DISNEY movies have had more romance than this!!!! Ariel was more excited to kiss Prince Eric in the "Little Mermaid" than this!!!! There are 100's of books out there where women are chasing after their "stepbrothers" with vim and vigor and Vicky is acting like the title of "boss" is some unbreakable line that just can't be crossed no matter what they've seen and done and been thru together ...... He's a 900 yr. old Vampire who's supposedly in love with her but even after admitting it out loud he still just calls her his assistant even in his head....
WTF ... No offense but I think even an Amish " romance" novel would have more heat than this!!! Even with all his supposed lusting for her he's never give her more than hugs and some chaste and or healing kisses..... These to have the intensity of two wet matches.... As just a story I'd give this three and a half to four stars maybe, but as a romance ? I give it -0 ...... This a romance with all story and NO HEAT AND OR ROMANCE!!!! Two book and they still call each other Mr. Ritter and Miss Westernrly .
Ugh!!!!! I'm not sure how much farther just Curiosity will take me... Her adopted pet shows a 100% More affection for her than she in her complete and utter cluelessness shows the H and for the most part the H shows her...
Story good ... Romance non existent !!!!

Still seriously hooked

So I wasn't sure if the second could book could keep up with the first . There were a few scenes that were incorrect , like when you watch a movie and the door is open only a second later it's closed. Yeah I catch those things and they drive me nuts . But altogether another spectacular journey . Loved the new twist on the hell hounds .I'm not saying more because it's a spoiler . Again I was kept laughing , yelling , and no waying through the book. Just a fun read. I love the humanity and how humble the characters are . Strength is not only a physical form, it's the psychological and this blended both

a great second book

I am still really enjoying this series. There are a lot of characters, but somehow I an keep track of who is human, vampire, werewolf or fae. And, even though the point-of-view can change paragraph-to-paragraph, it isn't jarring & it's easy to tell whose perspective I'm reading.

This is a mystery without feeling like clues are dropped too obviously, the relationship with Darien & Vicky feels natural, and the fantasy element is explained well--without feeling like there are big "info dumps" of how the supernatural works in this world.

I am really looking forward to the next installment.

Living with intent is much easier when you're not worried about some serious life issues like putting food on the table. An example from this author is, "downloading" movies on her kids iPads before travelling adds to her stress level. Another example, she spontaneously decided to take a week at an expensive fitness retreat, for herself. It's difficult for me to identify with someone who has enough financial blessings that they buy iPads for their children and can go to an expensive retreat, for herself.

Living with intent when the decisions in your life are food, rent, heat or medicine. Or, how to keep your children safe while living on the "wrong side of the tracks".

Obviously this book did not reach me on the deep level I had hoped for. But for financially secure folks that can actually be there to pick their kids up from school instead of praying for good tips today, it could be helpful.

I'll admit I was a bit skeptical before starting to read this book. I have my fair share of self help and parenting books on my bookshelf and the vast majority of them fail to capture my attention. When they are written by well known people, I have often found that they are even more likely to lapse into random name dropping and platitudes of obviousness masked as advice. Thankfully, this book is different.

From the first chapter, I was immediately intrigued by the author's candidness and willingness to display her imperfections. As she shares her personal stories of struggling to fit all the challenges of being an entrepreneur and a mom into the average day, something interesting happens. Despite her famous family and direct access to superstars and celebrities ... Mallika Chopra comes across as being just like any of us.

And that, perhaps, is the greatest victory of this book. In a crowded self help category where every star seems to become an overnight parenting expert and life coach - Living With Intent is surprisingly human. Which, of course, is kind of the point. Chopra's INTENT is to be a great mom and successful business person. We see ourselves in her entertainingly honest anecdotes of sometimes not quite managing to succeed. Ultimately, it is her deeply relatable journey to get there which I found so engaging, and the reason I highly recommend this book.

A good read, that can teach you a thing or two.

Like many self-help books, Living with Intent does aim to help its readers to find the road to a more happier, fuller life. When I started reading the book, I was very curious as to what advices I'd find. Surprisingly enough, if at times there were passages that resonated as "oh I have already heard that before", many caught my attention and earned a couple of highlights and side notes. This book does not provide us with miracle solutions, but rather enables us to accept our flaws and learn to rectify our trajectory for a better lifestyle.

One thing I loved the most about Mallika's writing was that she wasn't afraid to expose her imperfections and her doubts, making her narrative even more appealing and easy to relate to. She didn't try to shove down some universal truths but rather explained why she believed in this or that, or why she chose to take a leap of faith and embrace a life of purpose and intent.

However, if the book started off well, the way it was ending felt a bit forced. Suddenly names were dropped off, as if to advertise for fellow celebrities. The book even ended with an afterword of her famous father, Deepak Chopra, and again, there was nothing really meaningful that was said there that justified the need for an afterwords. It seemed to me more like Mallika needed her father's endorsement to convince her readers to buy into her wordings, which to be honest was totally unnecessary because she had conveyed her message perfectly until the end. The fact that she only looked to interview famous people was also a bit of a rub.

Overall, I think the book was well written, the stories were beautiful and inspiring. If I got a bit annoyed at the end, I have learned a lot from the pages and I would recommend the book to anyone, who like me, is interested with living an intentional life.

Good info but a little expensive.

It is good solid info and should be helpful to most struggling in the UG position.

But this just covered one position against one other position. If the each other situation from UG will be covered in its own module it will get a little pricey by the time it is all done. However still less expensive than coaching.

Very solid poker book

Verneer is a really intelligent player and he explains concepts very well. Definitely worth the price. EP is a tough spot at the table and you have to be prepared, this book prepares you. Great book!
