Hebrew for the Ears

These two CD's serve as another helpful addition to Zondervan's ever growing original languages library. Pennington again is the "author" who lends his voice to the reading of the Hebrew words and their definitions. It basically follows the same format as his New Testament Greek Vocabulary.
All Hebrews words occurring 20 times and more are given in their descending order of frequency. Pennington also says the alphabet in the beginning and like the NT counterpart there is a 40 page booklet to accompany the CDs. The glosses (definitions) follow Zondervan's Vocabulary Guide for Biblical Hebrew by Van Pelt and Pratico.
The only disappointment which I have so far is that I learned Hebrew using the modern pronunciation whereas Pennington uses the Classical pronunciation. (...)

Well Done

Pennington performs a valuable service to anyone who seeks to learn Hebrew on their own. The vocabulary includes the most common Hebrew words so that the learner will have the maximum benefit of memorization. Each is clearly pronounced enabling the student to recognize similar sounding words, which is important since much Hebrew Scripture relies on word plays and punning. It is a great resource.

this product is good but...

I actually bought the Old Testament Hebrew Vocabulary CDs at a book store for full price, should have come to amazon... I am enjoying them and finding that they are extremely helpful. I like that there is a booklet included so that you can distinguish between letters and vowels that may sound alike on the CD. I have found that my knowledge of hebrew words has increased exponentially since starting this program and while I don't quite feel comfortable reading the Hebrew OT, I haven't finished the program yet, I am noticing more and more that I will read my English version and come across words that are likely translations of words that I know.

I believe that these CDs would be a good place to start in your Hebrew education if you want to get into the OT as quickly as possible. I know for me incentives like reading a sentence or passage in Hebrew really keeps me going through some of the most grueling hours of rote memorization. I would suggest for all that are really serious about their study of original texts to start with these CDs and then get a good grammar book to fill in the gaps. Of the five or six Hebrew grammar books that aimless seminary professors have subjected me to 'A Practical Grammar for Classical Hebrew' by Weingreen is by far the best I have found. He does a great job about explaining not only what the proper grammar is but also why it is.

Now for the negatives about this CD. First, I'm not sure if everyone would consider this a negative or not but he uses the classical pronounciation instead of the modern pronounciation of Hebrew. It is easy enough to switch around in your head but I figure if you are going to go through all the trouble of learning a language that is still spoken today why not learn it in such a way that you can use it on that trip to Israel that you've always wanted to take? Secondly, the CD is helpful for initially learning how to pronounce the words but after that it is just about useless. My suggestion is to get some 3x5 cards cut them into fifths and write the words on there. you can take the flashcards anywhere and they will be easier to prove your comprehension to yourself. It is really helpful, however, that he set these words up in manageable lists according to frequency. Also, I don't feel that he gives you enough time on the CD to think about the meaning of the word before tell you or enough time to go over the word after you get the definition before he starts on the next word. I know I could use the pause button but pausing that gets old fast. I think he probably intends you to write the cards. Lastly, learning a language takes real committment. We are talking between 1-3 hours a day for several months, maybe even years. What a person puts into learning a language is what they will reap from it. I have found so far that every word frequency list has several words that I am either already familiar with or can guess and at least one word that gives me a theological insight into a passage or thought process behind the OT. I think these are gifts from God to help continue on what is sometimes a dry task, but even with these there is still a lot of discipline and committment required in learning the language. Don't fall into the trap of believing that you put the CDs in your car stereo and magically learn Hebrew on your way to work.

This review went on longer than I anticipated so to sum up. Good beginning resource to jump start a life long discipline of study and faithfulness. Take the book and make flashcards, use the CDs to correct pronounciation. Well worth the money. God bless.

Beautiful to look at, but a headache to read

The images are gorgeous and crisp, so details really shine. Each god-like creature is so different from what you've ever seen before, that it is positively baffling to take in. The mythology is so interesting, but unfortunately I can't rate this any higher because the book is RIDDLED with all sorts of grammatical errors, misspellings, and design flaws, such as images overlapping text or background art, where in other pages it does not do this. These errors serve as an enormous point of distraction from the material. I literally had to stop reading to really enjoy the book as an art book alone, which is very sad because there seems to be a lot of creative thought put into the story.

Should have been proofread and looked over by an editor.

While it's a nice book, Peter has soooo many amazing paintings of all of his angels and demons from the book of ENOCH that he should have created a book of all his stunning work. This book only has about 10-15 images large scale of the Angels and the rest is story. It's a thin book. It's nice to have for a collection, but his work belongs together in a larger book.

Beautiful and interesting, but perhaps a bit short in length and content

'Angelarium: Book of Emanations' is a gorgeous art book by Peter Mohrbacher with a strange story.

The story that accompanies the pictures is about a wanderer named Enoch. At the beginning of his travels, he is given a journal that he assumes is filled, but finds to be empty, for him to fill. He approaches his journey with the tree of life, angels and an unknowable being known as Ein Sof. Each section is based on what seems like a geometrical character. The painting is then expanded out into a an abstract shape, then a fully rendered painting. Along with it are a few paragraphs of how Enoch found this particular being.

It's only 60 pages long, so it doesn't take long to go through the content, so it may or may not be worth the $25 price tag. The text complements the art, but they are basically journal entries. The paintings are nice. I enjoyed reading this.

Mixed Feelings

Just finished this book - It took me awhile to get through it. I enjoyed the developement of the main characters Sinnamon & Essence but some parts just did not make sense to me.

Then I was disappointed to find that this was a sequel to a book that is not available in print or on Kindle - so I have no background to understand the background of Gage & others mentioned toward the end.

May when the third part is released, it may tie up any loose ends for me or maybe I may leave feeling the same way I did with this.

This was one of the best urban books I have read this year. The author is very talented and has put together a book that is a true page turner. Once Sinnamon and Essence get together there is no stopping them until the very end. I love her relationship with Esco but I want to know how it plays out in the next book. Good job.

This one of my favorite books, and Gretchen is one of my favorite authors. I purchased this for my babies' caregiver for Christmas. She really appreciated both the rigor of the treatment as well as how well written the book. The fact that it was in her native language (she is originally from Colombia) made it that much more enjoyable to read.

A First Course in Optimization Theory introduces students to optimization theory and its use in economics and allied disciplines. The first of its three parts examines the existence of solutions to optimization problems in R(superscript n), and how these solutions may be identified. The second part explores how solutions to optimization problems change with changes in the underlying parameters, and the last part provides an extensive description of the fundamental principles of finite- and infinite-horizon dynamic programming. Each chapter contains a number of detailed examples explaining both the theory and its applications for first-year master's and graduate students. "Cookbook" procedures are accompanied by a discussion of when such methods are guaranteed to be successful, and equally importantly, when they could fail. Each result in the main body of the text is also accompanied by a complete proof. A preliminary chapter and three appendices are designed to keep the book mathematically self-contained.

Not Self-Contained

This book mostly has clearly written proofs and easy-to-follow explanations for students who have some experience in proofs or basic analysis. In my opinion, it is definitely not a book for someone who has only seen calculus.

However, I have three very large problems with this book.

The first, and most important, is that the book is not self contained. In many theorems in Chapter 1, the reader is asked to see Baby Rudin for the proof. While it's pretty easy to find a PDF of Baby Rudin online for free, this is still not ideal. First, because Rudin and this book use different terminology/symbols for the same concepts, so there is a bit of unnecessary complexity in figuring how out Rudin's proof fits into this book's theorem. For example, the proof of Theorem 1.21 in this book is left to the proof of Rudin's Theorem 2.41. However, Rudin relies on the concept of k-cells, which this book never speaks of. Second, and most importantly, Rudin's proofs rely on concepts that this book has not defined. For example, Theorem 1.28 in this book relies on the proof of Theorem 2.36 in Baby Rudin. However, the proof in Baby Rudin relies on the concept of an "open cover," which this book does not define until a couple theorems later!

The second complaint I have about this book is that sometimes the proofs are sloppy. For example, at the beginning of section 1.2.8, the author states that unbounded sets must be compact and states that an unbounded sequence cannot contain a convergent subsequence. Instead of explaining why, though, he simply puts "(why?)" in the text. While this might be great for a student who is following this book in a class or with an instructor, this is incredibly frustrating for someone who is studying on their own.

Finally, as far as I can tell, this book is missing any discussion of the Bolzano Weierstrass Theorem, which is an important result in economics.

Update: The definition of a determinant is wrong in this book. It states you should take the negative of even permutations when it should be of odd permutations.

Good introduction to the field of optimization

This book gives a nice introduction to the theory of optimization from a purely mathematical standpoint. The computational and algorithmic aspects of the subject are not treated, with emphasis instead placed on existencetheorems for various optimization problems. The author does an effective job of detailing the mathematical formalism needed in optimization theory. After a brief review of background mathematics in the first chapter, the author outlines the objectives of optimization theory in Chapter Two. He also gives some examples of optimization problems, such as utility maximization, expenditure minimization, profit maximization, cost minimization, and portfolio choice. All of these examples are extremely important in industrial, logistical, and financial applications. The author is also careful in this chapter to outline his intentions in later chapters, namely, that of finding the existence of solutions to optimization problems, and also in the characterization of the set of optimal points. The existence question is outlined in Chapter Three using only elementary calculus, and the Weierstrass theorem is proved. Necessary conditions for unconstrained optima are examined in the next chapter, again using only elementary calculus and linear algebra. Lagrange multipliers and how they are used in constrained optimization problems are effectively discussed in Chapter 5. To discuss how optimization problems vary with a set of parameters, in particular if they vary continuously with the set of parameters, the author introduces the concept of a corespondence. This is essentially a map that assigns sets to points. His discussion of upper and lower-semicontinuity is very clear and I think one of the best presentations given at this level. He then proves a maximum theorem, showing that parametrized optimization problems can have continuous solutions under certain conditions. A game-theoretic application follows along with statements, but not proofs, of the Kakutani and Brouwer Fixed Point theorems. The author introduces an order relation on the parameter space and discusses parametric monotonicity in the next chapter. Again a game theory application is given along with a statement (but not a proof) of the Tarski Fixed Point theorem. The last two chapters cover dynamic programming and these are the most interesting chapters of the book. It is here that the author makes the connection with more advanced treatments of optimization theory, via Banach spaces and nonlinear functional analysis. With further reading in real analysis and topology, readers will be well on their way to understanding more advanced treatments of optimization theory that use nonlinear functional analysis and differential topology.

A first course in Optimization theory - that is what the book is. The target audience is those who are inetersted in the theory of optimization. Some familiarity with Mathematical Analysis and Matrix Algebra would be helpful; however the first chapter lays the mathematical foundation and a careful reading would enable the reader to tackle the rest of the book.
Previous reviews have made a chapter by chapter analysis of the book and hence I will just highlight some of the things I liked about the approach used by the author. Whenever a theorem is stated different examples are given to emphasize the points. For example when stating the Lagrange Theorem and Kuhn-Tucker theorem the author points out when the theorems fail and gives detailed examples to illustrate the ideas. The author often draws from examples in finance to illustrate the practical importance of the theory. The one I liked most was how a cost minimization problem was solved by reducing the solution space to a compact space and then applying the Weierstrass theorem. The author also shows how some of the "cookbook" procedures really work and warns the readers against potential pitfalls in applying such procedures. If you are planning to study optimization theory and are looking for a good entry point into the subject this book is for you.
