Rather basic

As a long-time educator and newbie teacher/librarian who will be responsible for helping other teachers integrate technology into their classrooms, I've been hunting around this summer trying to find a book to hone my skills on wikis, podcasts, blogs, RSS feeds, etc. Not just how to set them up, but how to use them in the classroom. I had hopes this book would be it. Unfortunately, it was far too basic. It explained what each of the technologies (and many others) are--just in case you didn't know--but left this reader fairly clueless as to how to actually get started. Or with any ideas how to use the technology once I WAS up and running. The book does give a PLETHORA of wonderful websites (hence the 3 stars), and provides a DVD and online web resource for practicing the technologies. Still, Will Richardson's book (see link) was infinitely more useful and practical--and a whole lot cheaper! Blogs, Wikis, Podcasts, and Other Powerful Web Tools for Classrooms

Waste of Paper

This was a required text for a course on Technology in the Classroom. I realize everyone is at different levels, but this book was ridiculous. Printed in 2005 and intended for college students and teachers, it actually spent pages defining terms like "keyboard" and "word processor." I find it hard to believe that the target audience could possibly be ignorant of this information. The book was condescending and useless. I've never resented spending money on a textbook so much in my life.

Not what I expected, but I'll make it work.

I expected something a bit more helpful than this classroom textbook on the history of technology in education, and its, "oh yeah, last minute," ideas for using technology in specific classrooms. Unfortunately, I paid for this, and will have to use it, but, luckily, I didn't pay full price for it.
If you want a history of technology in education, (and in in general), this is the book for you. If not, keep looking.

About the Author
Sagini Jared Keengwe is a Professor of Teaching and Learning at the College of Education and Human Development, University of North Dakota (UND), USA. Keengwe is the editor-in-chief of two IGI Global Book Series: Advances in Higher Education and Professional Development (AHEPD) and Advances in Early Childhood and K-12 Education (AECKE). Keengwe has published over 85 journal articles, book chapters, and books with a focus on active learning pedagogies and mobile learning technologies in education. Keengwes work was honored with the 2011 UND McDermott Faculty Award for Excellence in Academic Advising. He was also a recipient of the 2010 North Dakota Spirit Faculty Achievement Award, and the 13th Annual Martin Luther King Jr. Award in recognition of significant contribution in scholarship and service respectively. At the national level, Keengwe was one of the 10 recipients selected to receive the 2010 American Educational Research Association (AERA) Teacher Education Travel Award.

At 8am on 29 May 1999, Cathy O’Dowd, a 30-year-old mountaineer from South Africa, stepped onto the summit of Everest and into history. Yet Cathy eventually had to leave her to save her own life.

Now Cathy has captured the drama of her Everest climbs, her passion for the challenge of climbing mountains and her love for wild places in this story of her four attempts on the mountain. Cathy tries to answer the question of why, if climbing Everest can be so dangerous, people still want to do it.

In a new chapter, Cathy shares the previously untold story of her fourth Everest expedition, an attempt to climb a new route on the seldom visited and very risky east face of Everest. Storms, avalanches and crevasses all contributed to an expedition fraught with difficulty.

Its easy to pass judgment on Ms

There is such a renewed interest in Everest since the movie was released this past year. This book captures the inherent beauty, conditions and dangers involved in high altitude climbing. A fascinating read. The life and death decisions involved on the mountain are ones I hope I never have to face. Its easy to pass judgment on Ms. O'Dowd, but unless you were there you just don't know what you would do. I know I could never make such a climb but I am enraptured by the thrill of it and Cathy O'Dowd brings that thrill to life in this book. Well Done Ms. O'Dowd, Well Done!

The Ultimate Everest Adventure - a must have ebook

Cathy O'Dowd's book "Just for the Love of it" .The first lady to climb Mt Everest which was the ultimate climbing adventure. A book of incredible bravery, inspiration and sadness. The thrill of success mixed with love, comradeship, loss of dear friends and death. It is an incredible story by an incredible lady of an incredible adventure. If you like and admire true adventurers this is a must read,. Even if you have no interest in mountain climbing you will find this a very enjoyable book, well written, informative and a detailed description of one of earths great adventures.

Everything you want to know about RoR....but were afraid to ask

First thing I'd like to point out is this book is up to date with Rails 2.0.2 (released 12/07) which is important as many things have changed like script/generate scaffold, in-place-editing and auto-complete have been deprecated, etc. Essentially, enough to baffle and frustrate a relative newcomer unaware of these changes who is trying to get started on 2.0.2 with older tutorials.

This book absolutely delivers on its promise to "fill the void" between beginner books and recipe/cookbook style books. It is the one-stop resource I've been seeking since Rails hit the streets.

I bought this book hesitantly as there were no reviews yet. I've purchased at least a dozen books on RoR over the past 2-years, some good, some average, some not so good. I can honestly say this is the best coverage of RoR I've read - without hesitation! I've only written one other review here at Amazon which was for David Black's "Ruby for Rails" which was a great book a few years ago if you didn't know Ruby programming.

I own AWDR I & II, Pick Axe, Recipes I&II, Cookbook etc. etc. Good books in their own right but I was still left not fully understanding key elements of building a solid, well tested enterprise ready site. This resulted in me making a ton of mistakes leading to endless hours of Googling to find others who had encountered the same problems, finding random tutorials, picking up a tip here, a tip there, etc. It was pure scattershot!

My application design was not cohesive and lacked the fundamental building blocks and safeguards necessary for continued growth. For lack of a better analogy, the apps I've built with Rails have been nothing more than patchwork quilts temporarily held together with rapidly disintegrating stitches. Enter "Professional Ruby on Rails."

I received "Professional Ruby on Rails" the other night and thought I'd spend an hour or two skimming chapters and hopefully picking up a couple tips. 7-hours later after fully reading through everything in several chapters I was stunned at how many things I was doing wrong. Noel has done an exceptional job of covering key details that are typically glossed over or go untouched in other books and tutorials.

For example, how many tutorials have you seen where you get step-by-step intimate details on how to generate the models/controllers/scaffolds, run migrations, set up your associations, validations create a snappy View with some nifty AJAX....and then bang......the tutorial ends with "Now write your tests and check it into SVN". Hmmmmmm? Sounds pretty easy, okay...done.

Building the AWDR bookstore was reasonably covered but testing and fixtures were an afterthought. There was a chapter dedicated to testing but was general coverage and did not comply with Rails best practices of test driven development. This book fills that void wonderfully.

In the interest of full disclosure, I'm a hobbyist and don't make my living with web development. I'd rate myself with low-level intermediate Rails skills having built 3 or 4 "personal" projects, trivial in every sense of the word. In early 2007 I had attempted to start a non-trivial project, my "Big Idea". 6-months of agony later, I became so frustrated and lost, I walked away from Rails entirely. The biggest reason for my frustration, also my biggest weakness, was testing and it came back to bite me in the arse on more than a zillion occasions. In short, my app was hopelessly broken and the only solution was to scrap it and start over. Not fun!

Having spent a few nights with the examples and advice in Professional Ruby on Rails, I've come to realize I was going about testing in a completely bass ackwards way. I was also not using SVN properly and missing opportunities left and right to refactor code that is now, in just a few short days of reading this book, so blatantly obvious. I also didn't realize how trivial it was to build your own rake tasks to automate tedious chores I had previously performed manually. And I'm really only halfway through the book!

In short, no Rails book or resource I've read, and I've read a lot, has come close to teaching me exactly when, why, what, where and how to build a real-world application, step by step, like Professional Ruby on Rails. I give it my highest recommendation and feel confident that, thanks to Professional Ruby on Rails, my "Big Idea" now has a chance!

Professional RoR -- best ever for pro Rails Developers

Professional RoR is the best book ever for a modestly experienced Web developer like myself. It thoroughly addresses all those little issues that are essential to developing a sound website. With the Well-grounded Rubyist and Pro Active Record, you've the best reference material for RoR development IMHO.

Excellent Book- For People Who Know Rails

This is a fantastic book specifically geared at people who know Ruby and Rails. It says this in the opening chapter, and infers this in the title- "Professional Rails". So it's funny to see a review here complaining that you would be lost if you didn't Ruby and Rails.

And, as the other reviewer mentioned, it actually writes the tests! Better yet, it often writes the test first. And thank god there wasn't another "intro to ruby/intro to rails/installing rails" chapter at the beginning. Hell, it doesn't even say what a generator and pretty much starts "rails -d mysql soupsonline" with no explanation. This is fantastic! I was so excited.

Most of the first chapter discusses REST and TDD (test driven development) laying a foundation for more advanced rails applications and development techniques. As REST is relatively new to Rails, and a more advanced topic, I thought it was a great start. Routes are on page 8, and Ajax is already in the app by the end of chapter 1 (page 34).

Chapter 2 is using subversion, which at first I was leary of, but then quite accepting. Subversion (and now Git, which unfortunately wasn't big yet when the book was written) is a critical part of the advanced rails development workflow and this chapter is very rails centric in exposing best practices and tips.

I did a lot rails programming back in 2005, and recently picked it up again. This books was by far the most relevant for me, offering high value for time invested and effectively covering newer Rails developments (migrations, ajax support, capistrano, mongrel, etc.).

Also exciting was the fact that this was one of 10 different ruby and/or rails books at the bookstore.

If you are an experienced developer moving to Ruby and Rails, I'd also recommend this book. Take this and the Flannagan/Matz book and you'll be flying in no time.

If you are just moving to Rails 2, this book is perfect as well.

An if you've been working on Rails 2 and want to move to the next level, I think this is also a great book.

As an aside, I generally love the Wrox books. They are uniquely positioned to experienced developers and written by people who are scary in their expertise. They are also written in very clear prose- advanced material without the complex language of experts.

Highly recommended.

I am one of the professors Dr. Seifert is talking about in his review. I continue to use this textbook in both graduate and undergraduate classes on job design. Every semester I search for a better alternative, but am unable to find it. I find this book to be helpful and a good reference that incorporates ergonomics, work design, and methods engineering. (I also use old versions of the lab book that contain very well-made forms.) This text contains the best discussion of time standards I have seen. The 11th edition contains a new chapter on cognitive work. This is a topic I have always discussed and am glad to see formal treatment of it in the new edition. As with any textbook, I do not use it as the sole source of information taught in the classroom and would not recommend it as a sole source. I use the topics in the text to launch discussions and research papers on systems theory, lean, cycle time, environmental, process improvement methodologies, ethics, and other issues for manufacturing and non-shopfloor applications. I find the book especially useful in the area of work design and time standards.
Students have found these skills useful in the workplace. Many of our students work in process improvement and lean implementations. They use these skills to reduce cycle time and balance the lines to meet the demands of customers. Good implementation of lean requires knowledge of how to balance a line to meet customer demand, identify constraints, reduce cycle time, eliminate waste, understanding and dealing with change, cost/benefit analysis, and a direct understanding the relationship between the customer demand and production rate. This text touches on or covers in detail these topics.
I find that the book appears to focus on machine and operator efficiency and utilization, has a primarily decompositional view of work, and concentrates mostly on shopfloor operations. Even with these drawbacks, the text gives the reader solid information on improving workplace design and reducing cycle time while improving worker safety and productivity. I use the discussion on machine and worker utilization to compare and contrast with other manufacturing philosophies, and to relate what the text is covering to more 'big picture' aspects. Other topics not included are a good discussion of maintenance operations and quality. I suggest using other sources to incorporate those topics. All in all, the book is not perfect. It is a very good reference book and text book.
