Fantastic resource

WOW everything I didn't know about growing and incorporating leafy greens in our lives. I was shocked at the nutritional value of greens, specially the protein of dried leaf concentrate. This book goes from the cellular level of plants along to some nice recipes. Thorough explanations and alternatives and data. All questions were answered including how to hide greens in foods for picky eaters and grow year round in colder climates.
Big garden changer for me.

This is a unique and invaluable book. It covers all aspects of growing, preserving and utilizing leaves, plus the reasons why we will absolutely have to do this, sooner or later... so let's get started now!!

More manifesto about commercial food growth than useful content

I purchased the book looking forward to diversifying what I grow in the garden. The first chapter that starts to discuss alternatives to grow doesn't begin until page 97, and includes some common crops. There are some summary listings for several plants that were of interest, with details on a few more. If you are looking for horticultural information on growing green leafy vegetables, a web search and your local extension office are good resources. The author's foundation sounds like a great cause, but it's not why I purchased the book. Recipes start on page 215, and there are sections on setting up a garden, vertical gardening and preservation also in the book (before the recipes).

INSIGHTFUL LOOK INTO A RESIDENTS LIFE

As a retired medical transcriptionist, I found this book enjoyable and well written. What was really "scary" to me was the fact that these Residents work so many long back to back shifts caring for humans and making life threatening decisions regarding someones body. The AMA really needs to change and stop this practice of working residents and interns on back to back 24 hour shifts. Who does it help? A "good read" for anyone who has worked with doctors and nurses in hospitals.

A healing touch for a weary reader

"I have tried, more than anything else, to be faithful to the inner life of medicine."

Terrence Holt wrote "Internal Medicine" over a period of ten years after he completed his residency. Many doctors who produce books about how they honed their skills insist that everything they tell us is basically true, except that they changed names and identifying characteristics to protect their patients' privacy. Holt, on the other hand, claims that he can do justice to his subject only " by transforming it into a parable." The author creates scenarios that encapsulate what he learned during his training. The patients he describes are "assemblages drawn from a variety of sources, compiled from multiple cases."

This introduction almost persuaded me to put "Internal Medicine" down without going further. After all, I crave verisimilitude--not flights of fancy--in works of non-fiction. I persisted out of curiosity, and found Holt to be a gifted and sensitive writer who captures the terror, uncertainty, exhaustion, and exhilaration that medical trainees must feel while they stumble along, trying to acquire experience, knowledge, and self-confidence.

Holt evokes the vulnerability of a patient who is wheeled into the emergency room and left on a gurney for hours, has terrible symptoms and waits in trepidation for his prognosis, and senses that that a cure is unlikely--there may nothing more that anyone can do. In addition, Dr. Holt takes us on rounds; consults with other doctors and nurses; wracks his brain to come up with correct diagnoses and a sensible treatment plans; responds to codes; tackles the unenviable task of informing families that their loved ones have passed on; and uneasily navigates the twilight zone between life and death.

There are also bizarre passages about uncooperative individuals who are both mentally and physically ill, a tormented oncologist who blithely ignores the Hippocratic Oath, and a woman whose face is disfigured, but derives comfort from the sight and sound of birds. Certain sections are contrived and melodramatic, and may displease readers who prefer realism to fabrication. Still, "Internal Medicine" packs a wallop. It is a powerful, engrossing, and often dispiriting exploration of how physicians deal with (or fail to deal with) the demands of their challenging profession.

AWESOME!! easy to grasp, read, understand and you will never want to close the book!! ;) critical reading is found everywhere and for most people incl me find this area of English Reading hard!! i've done SAT, ACT and have to say that i really struggled in the beginning and scored way less than average in critical reading. i always wanted to skip this part because it made me bored :D now this might seem weird to you guys but it's because of this book that i have ACED these tests (my other areas are strong). so if you're either in this situation or just looking to improve your reading skills then this is your book!! after reaching the end of this book, you will LOVE critical reading :P you may not too :P but personally now i love it and thanks to Langan!! :)

Should be in every climber's library

This should be in every climber's library, along with Horst's other works. His material is backed by sound sports science and legitimately works. This is the recently-released third edition of this book, which updates it with some of the same, more recent information he has included in Training for Climbing and Maximum Climbing. Although there is a lot of overlap with those works, this book focuses more on higher end climbers. It not only works for those trying to get to 5.12, but for those trying to advance at all in those higher grades of 5.12+.

The self-evaluations in this work are less elaborate than in his other works, especially compared to Conditioning for Climbing, which had very good evaluations. That is a shame because his better ones can be very helpful. In spite of that this is a great book, especially when combined with Conditioning for Climbing and Maximum Climbing (if you are high-end enough to use this book, you may want to skip Training for Climbing, which is largely the same material but aimed at climbers of all levels).

How to Climb 5.12 is more motivational talk than climbing guidance. There is some helpful material on scheduling, recovery, and cost-benefit assessment of different activities. However, it could stand more clear exercises for building climbing skills, strength, and eliminating fear of falling.

An unforgettable philosophy

This wonderful little book outlines a kind of caring that can give order and meaning to our life. Mayeroff's caring is a process in which we selflessly help an 'other' (be it a person, idea, or ideal) to grow and actualize itself.

Caring requires effort: Knowing (many things about the other and ourself); Alternating Rhythms (incorporating feedback in our caring); Patience (I like his definition: 'Patience is not waiting passively for something to happen, but it is a kind of participation with the other in which we give fully of ourselves.'); Honesty; Trust (of ourself as well as of the other); Humility; Hope (as an expression of a present alive with possibilities); and Courage.

By caring for the other, we become actualized. By focusing on the process, we show our concern for the future through the care we take with what is present now.

Caring can give order and meaning to life, if the others we choose are inclusive enough. Then these others become what Mayeroff calls 'appropriate others' -- they enable us to be complete, 'somewhat as playing music enables the musician to be himself.' Appropriate others become a center around which our life can be ordered.

Mayeroff believed that through finding and helping to develop our appropriate others, we discover and create the meaning of our life.

There are two reasons I wanted to review On Caring. One, it is a wonderful book that has stayed with me since I first read it years ago. Two, when I read The Faithful Wife by Sigrid Undset, I marveled at how beautifully that book seemed to incorporate Mayeroff's ideas.

Caring is something we can strive to do every day. Many oppportunities will open up as we interconnect with others on a day to day basis.

I always try to live by these sayings, do unto others as you would have others do unto you and, what you reap is what you sow. To receive love you must give love. It is our life's cycle. At times in our life we are the doers, the givers, at other times takers, receivers.

To be the taker is not selfish but self actualization. It requires humility to accept love, especially when you are not feeling loveable. In these pages Milton Mayeroff gives us a philosophy of life in a nutshell.

It is a small book but nevertheless brings great comfort and peace to the soul.

Other powerful authors are Victor Frankl who wrote Man's Search for Meaning, Man's Search for Meaning Abraham Maslow, Religions, Values, and Peak Experiences and Rabbi Harold Kushner, When Bad Things Happen to Good People. great intro for nonmajors book

This book is great for a non chemistry or physics major that wants to get a decent understanding of the "nano world". There is has a lot of information, but there is a fair amount of overlap from chapter to chapter due to the multiple authors. I found several typeos and did not agree with some of their descriptions or analogies of various scanning probe microscopes.

This book is well-written and covers the field of nanoscience well, but the material the publisher used for the pages gives off a very noxious odor. With the book open in front of you on the table, you will probably develop a headache within about ten minutes.

This book is really an "introduction" of nanoworld. It covers a lot of areas in nanoscience and nanotechnology but none of them are in detail. It makes me feel confused since it talks every aspect a little. At most of the time I just skim over the content.
