Overall an excellent book for the advanced learner...

This book is excellent for those who have studied Arabic and want to reach a higher level of proficiency and familiarize themselves with the Yemeni dialect. It consists of dialogs on various topics of interest in Yemeni society. The style of the language used throughout the book is semi-formal, i.e. not overly colloquial but also not purely MSA. Although there is no glossary at the end of the book, the vocabulary introduced in each lesson is explained in detail. Also, there are no grammatical explanations anywhere in the book and besides the short descriptions that introduce each chapter and the vocabulary definitions at the end of each chapter where English is used, this book strictly uses the Arabic script without transliterations for all Arabic content, which makes this textbook inadequate for the beginner. However, a strong point is that all the Arabic is vocalized which makes it easy to acquire the correct pronunciation.
One disappointment was that this book does not treat the Sana'ani dialect at all. This is not a book on Yemeni Arabic if you plan to use it in Sana'a. It is strictly an introduction to Adeni Arabic. Those who need to become proficient in the dialect of Sana'a would be better advised not to purchase this book as it will not be of use to them. For the Sana'ani dialect, there are excellent textbooks available by Professor Janet C.E. Watson of Salford University in England and Dr. Hamdy Qafisheh's Yemeni Arabic dictionary is an indispensable reference tool for the purpose of understanding the Sana'ani dialect.

The Surrender of Persephone

The Goddess of Spring, Persephone, feels like a child under the shadow of Demeter, her over protective mother. She longs to experience new wonders but is limited to consorting with virgin goddesses Athena and Artemis. Although she enjoys spending time with her friends, Sephie is drawn to the opposite sex. Her curiosity is satiated when Hades, called Aidon, God of the Underworld, appears. Before she can think, he snatches her up and takes her to his underground home. It's there that Persephone discovers that she is a submissive, and comes to relish Aidon's dominance, and her role as his wife and Queen of the Underworld.

Will she choose to remain by his side? And if so, how will she ever face her mother again after submitting her mind, body and soul to Aidon?

The retelling of The Rape of Persephone is a decadently erotic story of dominance and submission. Various gods, goddesses and players from the Hesiod and Greek/Roman legend and lore drop in to The Surrender of Persephone to recall various stories revolving around the underworld and its rulers. Each encounter between Persephone and Aidon is lavishly lurid. Their exploits explode throughout the realm of the dead. This dark place becomes Sephie's new playground and it's interesting to watch her blossom into womanhood under Aidon's dark mastery as she accepts her role as his wife and equal. Be warned. The sexual escapades are explicitly intense, equipped with instruments and acts to test your knowledge and comfort zone. I was thankful this pair falls deeply in love.

Alas, my only issue is a reoccurring one. Although these are gods and goddesses, they display human traits which seem to overshadow their supernatural posture. Maybe it's a device used to connect Sephie and Aidon to the audience but it's never worked on me. Where's the fun in reading about immortals when they're too much like people? Reaching the end, I still had to concede that Selena Kitt does an excellent job of fine tuning an old story with vigor, humor, intelligence and passion.

Read it for what it is

A good bit of time elapsed between my downloading this and actually reading it. So much time, that I opened it up thinking it was just another story about Persephone and Hades. Imagine my shock when I started reading, lol! I then came back and read the warnings and disclaimers about this book. I read the book regardless and advise other readers to take those warnings seriously.

BDSM is not my cuppa typically, but it did not seem entirely out of place or super offensive here. Maybe because I read this Hades as being closer to how one might typically imagine "the devil" to be. In that case, what else would you expect? Where it did fall short for me, was it was never clear to me why Persephone desired BDSM or what was the source of her "pain" that attracted Hades to her in the first place? Some Persephones are written as characters who have been abused by Demeter, but that was not the case here. From what I could see, Persephone had a pleasant life. Was she just bored to tears (lol) when Hades initially saw her crying and desired to exploit that apparent pain? A convincing explanation of this could've made this a 4 star read for me.

Also, the manner that Persephone decided to split her time between above and Underworld seemed a bit arbitrary to me. It had nothing to do with her eating or drinking anything. In that case, why did she decide on the time allocation that she chose? That was kind of unsatisfying. Overall, this was a well-written book that kept my attention despite some objectionable content.

Great Twist on an Old Myth

This was an interesting, more sexual retelling of the myth of Persephone and how she got to the Underworld (a.k.a, how she was kidnapped by Hades). Selena Kitt is a good writer who definitely knows how to write erotic fiction. I won't giveaway the book by telling you all the different things that Persephone and Aidon "try out" together, but there are a lot. Like, A LOT, A LOT. There was definitely loads of variety in this book. It was also interesting seeing how these characters would be perceived in a setting like this. I loved how the author threw in tons of other myths as well, making it seem like they were taking place right then and the rest of the gods where discovering these things as they happened. It made it fun for me, as someone who knows a lot about Greek mythology, to see the familiar characters in the beginning and know where they'll end up. I was constantly wondering how Kitt was going to fit it into what she had going already, so that helped to keep my interest throughout. The only problem I think I had with it was that as a goddess, Persephone seems pretty useless. She couldn't even stand up for herself against a mortal. I just couldn't really see how she was a god. However, that wasn't really the main focal point of this story, so it's easily over looked. If you've got some time and want to read something steamy, this is a good book to choose!

Morgan the librarian gave Jack and Annie a 4th scroll and a book to start an adventure. 3 other adventures were already done. The 4th scroll and book were about adventures in the Arctic. The Arctic was very cold, windy, and snowy. They openned the scroll which had a clue that they need to solve. The story was about solving the clue. They were cold and read the book the help them.

When they were the reading the book they heard wolves by the tree house. The wolves actually huskies pulling the sled with a seal hunter. The seal hunter gave them warm clothes made from seal skin. The seal hunter then invited them to his house which was an igloo. Jack and Annie ate seal meat. The seal hunter showed Jack and Annie the mask that looked like polar bears.

Jack and Annie took the mask outside to see what the dogs were barking at and found baby polar bears. They followed the baby polar bears to the frozen sea. Jack and Annie were on the ice and it began to crack. The mother polar bear got her babies off of the cracking ice by sliding on her belly. Jack and Annie follwed her off of the ice on their bellies. When they were on the shore they saw the Northern Lights.

Jack and Annie solved the riddle and went back to the treehouse. They could not go back right away because there was another riddle. They used the other scrolls to solve the 5th riddle which took them to their favorite place home.

The problem of the story was about solving the riddles to get them home. They got home by going on a adventure to find clues.

We really think this book that we read is one of the most fun books because it has great words. If you like adventures and mysteries, well you don't have to think twice about this book. We are telling you this book is great. For example, polar bears feel that they can fly when they slide on thin ice. This book is a very good book. The characters are funny, like Jack who is smart and likes books a lot. If you like the book, well, you and him have something in common. So pick this book because it is awesome! --Juan Figueroa, Jerry Albor, Sergio Rocha and Cristian Garnica in Ms. Marik's 6th grade class

A 1972 Systems Programming Classic!

A set text for one of the second year computer science units I undertook in 1980, when I repeated second year taking computer science and physics, after the 'university authorities' had found my seven political club memberships meant I had only 59 points of credit units, rather then the requisite 60 to advance into third year mathematics, this text describes well the 1970's general purpose mainframe and then minicomputer operating system systems programming task set then agiven to amany a programming team to implement on Data General minis, DEC minis, Prime minis, Pyramid minis, Interdata minis, and the several dozen then available minicomputer brands would fight aplenty over market share in terms of system performance, operating system and compiler functionality, featuritis unlimited!

A very well rounded text if I may say so. Now that modern Linux systems have achieved the high standards of quality attained by the minicomputer generation that preceded the personal computer, the real question to ask is when will the Windows operating system achieve the quality of these 1970's systems, most particularly in terms of security keeping out the viruses that trash disk drives!

"An attempt has been made to keep the book as machine independent as possible;" In fact, many of the examples are illustrated by way of discussing the IBM 360/370 machines!
