About the Author
Christine McMahon Sutton grew up in Iowa and is a graduate of the University of Iowa in Iowa City. She was a news reporter until 1986, when she joined the staff of the Iowa Medical Society in West Des Moines. At IMS, she was vice president of communications and editor of Iowa Medicine. She was an editor and health care writer for Oklahoma Magazine in Tulsa from 2001-2006. In 2006, she wrote the historical text One Hundred Years of Medicine in Oklahoma, which was published in the Oklahoma State Medical Association Journal on the occasion of that state’s centennial. She also wrote historical articles for the Oklahoma Dental Association Journal. In 2009, Christine and her former co-worker Cheri Jensen founded Management and Event Services, a home-based company that provides administrative services for the Iowa Association of County Medical Examiners, the Iowa Association of Pathologists and the Iowa Society of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology. Christine has two children and three grandchildren. She and her dog Lucy live quietly in a small town in Iowa.

Inspiring, informative, amazing

Christine McMahon Sutton has created an invaluable resource for caregivers. In touching and honest essays, she documents the journey she shared with her husband Gery--a thriving physician who specialized in geriatric care--from the time he was diagnosed with early-onset Alzheimer's to the celebration of his life four years later. This book is filled with countless moments of "it's not just me" recognition (financial struggles, frustration, mind-numbing fatique, guilt, grief, confusion, insensitivity, anger, to name a few), but it is so much more. It is a hard-working guide to being an effective and compassionate advocate, to living in the moment, to remembering to laugh and to cherishing life, even when it deals the cruelest of blows.

Good job Christine

I knew Dr. Sutton, from being a nurse at hospital in Claremore. He would spend time in the evenings when making his rounds, talking to us about his kids and our kids. He would bring some of them with him on weekends to make his rounds. He would take them with him to the nursing homes on weekends. Everyone loved Dr. Sutton. My best friend was a patient of his. We had gone to nursing school together, she became sick and died. He was very good about talking to us and helping us to understand this tragedy. He attended her funeral service. He was truly an amazing man and physician.
I was blessed to have worked with him. The book reaffirms what a good person and Doctor he was. He was just a down to earth good human being.

Soviet naval leaders mistakenly believed that a U.S. submarine was to blame for the loss, and they planned revenge. A trap was set: several Soviet vessels were gathered in the Atlantic, acting suspiciously. It would be only a matter of time before a U.S. sub was sent to investigate. That sub was Scorpion. Using the top-secret codes and the deciphering machine, the Soviets could intercept and decode communication between the Navy and Scorpion, the final element in carrying out the planned attack.

All Hands Down shows how the Soviet plan was executed and explains why the truth of the attack has been officially denied for forty years. Sewell and Preisler debunk various official explanations for the tragedy and bring to life the personal stories of some of the men who were lost when Scorpion went to the bottom. Controversy has steadily shadowed the 1968 sinking of the U.S. nuclear submarine Scorpion. The navy's official version of accidental sinking on a routine mission was challenged by allegations that the Scorpion was in fact torpedoed while shadowing a Soviet task force. Further rumors indict the spy John Walker for providing confidential codes to the Soviets, enabling them to track the submarine. Yet another account purports that the Soviets destroyed the Scorpion in retaliation for the sinking of one of their own subs. The two navies eventually called a truce rather than risk further disrupting relations. Sewell, a submarine veteran, and Preisler, a writer of techno-thrillers, add little new evidence in their version of the story; their new data is unfailingly familiar and they never succeed in making a persuasive case for the conspiracy and cover-up they claim occurred. Instead, Sewell and Preisler devote more time to anecdotes about the Scorpion's crew and their families and little vignettes of the routines on board a nuclear sub. What is undeniably useful is the book's demonstration of the high numbers of accidents between ships and aircrafts that were accepted as routine during much of the Cold War. Kenneth R. Sewell

Kenneth R. Sewell is a nuclear engineer and a U.S. Navy veteran who spent five years aboard the USS Parche, a fast attack submarine that was the Navy's most decorated ship. Parche conducted a number of special operations, some of which were revealed in Blind Man's Bluff. Since leaving the Navy, Mr. Sewell has held both Department of Defense and Department of Energy security clearances. In researching Red Star Rogue, Mr. Sewell had access to recently declassified intelligence files in the U.S. and Soviet military archives that were opened after 1991, among other sources. A New York Times bestseller, Red Star Rogue has been optioned for film by Warner Brothers.

An interesting story if true, this book tells an ...

An interesting story if true, this book tells an interesting tale of cold war intrigue. In short, it tells the story of the loss of a navy sub, allegedly sunk by the Soviets.While this is true, only during the Russian Spring did some of these details leak out. I have heard that another sub was involved, or that a ASW helo was used to do this in retaliation for the precieved loss of Soviet sub K-129. I should point out that K-129 was sunk while attempting to fire her missiles at Hawaii, and not by the USS Swordfish, as the Soviets believed. It is the authors contention that this may have been why Scorpion was attacked. Both Governments agreed to not discuss these two incidents, and that is why there was no conclusion to the inquest. It is a fact that Scorpion was attacked as the wreck does show an impact site still visible all these year later. I should also add that both actions would have been an act of war, And neither side wanted that( Thank God) Both crews died as heros, so Davy Jones keeps his secrets well. R.I.P.

Convincing but poorly-written

This book more or less functions as a companion piece to the author's other book on this theme "Red Star Rogue." The author's thesis is that the Soviets lost a submarine off Hawaii, the K129, and took revenge by attacking and sinking the USS Scorpion. This event took place during a time of heightened Cold War tension, as the North Koreans and Soviets had just attacked and captured the USS Pueblo. The Walker Spy Ring was in operation, and the author speculates that the intelligence bonanza aboard the Pueblo, combined with Walker's unmatched treachery, would have and did enable the Soviets to know of the Scorpion's location, and attack and sink her.

Frankly, I am pretty convinced. The authors make their case. This piece is best read after "Red Star Rogue" because the latter explains why the Soviets may have lost the K129 ballistic submarine and why they may have erroneously blamed the US Navy for that loss. The authors do a creditable job showing the weaknesses of the US Navy's official finding: that the Scorpion went down due to one of its own malfunctioning torpedoes. Well, we ordinary citizens will probably never know for sure.

This book does have some shortcomings. The authors provide us with endless anecdotes about the Scorpion crew, the details of the crews' families sufferings, etc. to an extent that a better editor would have condensed. They seem to be telling us about these details simply because they can. On the other hand, the details of the Pueblo incident and the Walker Spy Ring are interesting, and more than make up for this book's editing shortcomings. Worth reading. RJB.

About the Author
Patricia Ann Sunday was ordained into the Christian Ministry in 1995. In 1996 she incorporated Sunday Ministries in Baton Rouge, Louisiana as an outreach for healing and deliverance. Reverend Sunday is a native of Florida and is the author of several books. She is a Messianic Jewish (Hebraic Christian) believer in Yeshua/Jesus. The Prophet Nostradamus was a Messianic Jewish believer as well . . . and forced to become a Catholic by the Inquisition of his day or be beheaded. Although Nostradamus was of Jewish heritage, today's Messianic Jewish believer does not have to be born a Jew but is one that believes that we should go 'back to the fathers' regarding Jesus/Yeshua's teachings on the Lord's Feast Days and when we believe Yeshua the Messiah already came once and is coming again we are grafted into Israel. We not only study Torah in order to better understand the foundation of our faith but also because the Lord commanded us to 'keep His Feasts' which are found in the Torah (the first five books of Moses). That command has been usurped by the Catholic Church and replaced by "Mary and Saints" Feast days just as they replaced the SABBATH day of SATURDAY with Sunday worship. In this book the author breaks down and unravels the revelation given by the Prophet Nostradamus through his pictures into an easily understood prophetic picture of the immediate future.

About the Author
Janice Lee is a writer, artist, editor, designer, curator, and scholar. Interested especially in the relationships between metaphors of consciousness, theoretical neuroscience, and experimental narrative, her creative work draws upon a wide variety of sources. Her obsessive research patterns lead her to making connections between the realms of technology, consciousness studies, design theory, the paranormal & occult, biological anthropology, psychology, and literary theory. Her work can be found in antennae, sidebrow, Action, Yes, Joyland, Luvina, Everyday Genius, elimae, Black Warrior Review, Peacock Online Review, and elsewhere. [See WRITING] She is the author of two highly acclaimed novels: KEROTAKIS (Dog Horn Press, 2010), a multidisciplinary exploration of cyborgs, brains, and the stakes of consciousness; and Daughter (Jaded Ibis, May 2011). She also has several chapbooks Red Trees, Fried Chicken Dinner (Parrot/Insert Press, Forthcoming), and Other Worlds (Eohippus Labs, Forthcoming). Very confusing at first, Daughter explores neurological and existential philosophies and attempting to bring them into a somewhat physical existence. A girl finds an octopus in the desert. Two gods converse, maybe both comprising the Christian God, maybe one is the devil, maybe they have nothing to do with what comes to mind when we think of God. We know that they both create and they both destroy, but those are two very vague things. The octopus is potentially god. I believe the desert represents an environment devoid of necessities and the girl represents a conscious mind that has suffered trauma and took to the desert to seek solitude and purpose. Stumbling upon the unconscious mind: the octopus, and trying to find comfort somewhere in the between. Lines between physical and emotional are nonexistent, there's no clear plot movement in a physical sense but that's not to imply there's nothing happening. The books is very short and very full, making you question existence perpetually and in different manners at every page.

The book was interesting and had some really cool moments, but it seemed gratuitously abstract and unclear. There is a section of the novel devoted to unreadable text even. Overall, I'm not mad that I bought it, but it's not my favorite.

Cerebral Philosophies with Octopus

Jaded Ibis Press has again brought us a new way of thinking about the world. In the case of Daughter, thinking about the world is the same thing as - the world. And it's just as mysterious, full of blank spaces, meanings given and taken away, and swirled together anyway until the meaning of meaning grows multiple arms. A woman finds a dead octopus, which may be a god, perhaps the unconscious mind, in the desert, and is compelled to investigate.

In this book, "splayed" is a color; "competence" is interchangeable with "space." Legend and dream are one, and also, they are the reality of this book's events.

Two god-entwined serpentine brothers talk with each other when the dreams of seekers make them exist, at night, which, as we all know, is the time for parties. They create, and uncreate, just as the narrator does. She claims the right to change her mind, and that she does, the fabric of each moment almost arbitrarily shifting, impossible to pin down for long. "I want a glass case, too. To display my world in. Lend me some money." Says one of the bros to the other one.

Divisions are sifted through, the glass between them shattered into mosaics washed away by the tide. Monster/god/self/mirror/surviving/murder. The very forgetting of the mother, and the mother's forgetting of the daughter, in itself feel monstrous, as do many things in this book, because they trigger some of the deepest existential feelings.

Calling this non-narrative a novel gives a new definition to linear progression, to the story of life, which is also the story of death. This book, conceptual while remaining poignant, breaks new ground for writers to plant a new kind of writing in the future, more honest without the artifice of convention. The subject matter is consciousness itself, so encountering this book is encountering pure being perhaps more than any fiction I've yet read.

"I drift from one self into another, clasping tenticular detail, mouth held into night, a liquid hand drifting. The carcass trembles and floats, qualis spectator pereo. A fusing, a brownish tint, and the shadow is fishing for octopus. Blanched and without intention, the body is quiet, our bodies are quiet, becoming the desert and encircled by the hugging hands, points with fervor, swallowing the breaths of the sea."

Holga photos by Rochelle Ritchie Spencer work well, and are printed at high quality which does them justice. They dream on the page, and continually shock with the contents of a glass jar. Nature gains a new life, and otherwise, what has been captured out of nature without means of escape, including humanity, is held in a kind of strange stillness pulsating against the edges of its caged anonymity.

Jaded Ibis's creativity with the fine art limited editions continues to astound me. Oooooooo. This one is:

"An autopsy kit containing handcrafted surgical tools and various medical artifacts, including casts of octopi body parts in apothecary bottles. The kit is an aged wooden box with a secret compartment containing the novel printed on transparent "skin" and laid upon a bed of sand. Contains flash drive with soundtrack, Monster," by Resident Anti-Hero." Is it just me, or is this kind of - orgasmic - to imagine?

Janice's previous book exploring the nature of consciousness (and Frankenstein), Kerotakis, came out in 2010 from the excellent, and WILD Dog Horn Publishing.

I highly recommend Janice Lee's books to anyone who wants to ride the wave of literature peaking with her dissection of the nature of reality, using your mind as the delighted tool.

Great Customer Service

I needed this book for my pathophysiology class. I have been reading it throughout the semester without a problem. Now, as I near finals week, I turn the page - Chp 45, p.1146 - and the next page is Chap 39, p. 1003. After page 1018, the book returns to Chp 46, p. 1163. I am missing 15 pages of text that is mandatory reading. It is of course past a return date, but surely other textbooks had this error. I am going to try and contact the book's publisher.

UPDATE: Contacted the publisher and they sent me a new book free-of-charge without any hassles. THANK YOU to Amazon and Wolters Kluwer Customer Service.

The worst part of my week is muddling through these chapters.

Using this in my RN-BSN course. I have to say I had no issue with my ADN pathophys course, plus I am already an RN so I did not expect to be so confused by this book. Concepts are explained poorly, and leave out important details. I am a visual person, I love pictures and illustrations. If that is you, you will be disappointed. There are very few illustrations, and the ones featured lack things that I feel should be included. I tend to prefer Google to complete my homework, rather than dig through this book.

I bought this book as a requirement for an Advanced Pathophysiology course. It's not very well written, I used better books in my undergrad class. If you're looking for a good reference book, this is not the one to turn to. Doesn't explain larger concepts and uses terms without explaining what they mean. I'm disappointed in this book.

Struggles of a Star

This is a very good read about a pro baseball player who, despite the fame, nearly lost it all due to his addictions. Carbo shares the ups and downs of his personal and professional life, and Dr. Hintzis provides a clinical analysis of the various experiences that Bernie has had to deal with, good and bad. Most of the things in the book I had already done with my first dog, but the writers explained why my dog was acting this way with his toys and how to correct it.
My two dogs share toys now and don't fight (other that puppy play).
Sometimes it is hard to 'think like a dog', but you have to in order to communicate with yours. These writers must be part-dog, and the book is very effective.

The answer to an obedience trainer/behaviorist's prayer

This book is the most succinct, well-written treatise in print on what is takes to own a dog. A previous review of this book criticized it because it discusses the dog's ancestry to the wolf and ignored the years of domestication of dogs. The wolf ancestry of domestic dogs cannot be ignored when owning a dog. Alot of people are not meant to be dog owners or should only own certain breeds. This book delivers critical information on behaviorism. We teach dog training using Karen Pryor's technique's of positive reinforcement, but this alone is not enough to be a successful dog owner. Owning a dog is a lot of work and owning a rottweiler is not the same as owning a golden retriever. People must understand the canine psyche and be equipped with the knowledge of how to demonstrate pack leadership over a dog, along with training, in order to have a 'good dog'. Pack leadership is needed along with the principles of positive reinforcement to elicit good canine behavior. One is not a replacement for the other. This book is required reading for the beginner dog class. It equips the students with the knowledge of canine behaviorism they need. Every dog owner should have this book. Every potential dog owner should read this book and use it to decide if they are meant to be a dog owner. It is an excellent book.

Practical solutions to canine dominance problems here!

This is the best text for owners who are having difficulty attaining leadership status with their dogs. The lessons are written in plain English while drawing on sound, non-confrontational behavioral theory.
The authors take the angle of basing each lesson on what is known about the functioning of a wolf pack. The position of dominant vs. lower-ranking wolves is explored. Who eats first? Who sleeps where? Who initiates play? Who goes through narrow passageways first?
Especially interesting to me was the explanation of how meaningful body posture and physical positioning is to dogs.
I especially recommend this book to dog trainers working with the general public or to any dog owner whose dog who perhaps has JUST BEGUN to exhibit dominant behaviors such as pulling on the leash, ignoring known commands, guarding of food or objects, or giving warning growls when disciplined.
I would not recommend this book to owners trying to correct biting problems with a dog who already has a history of fear or dominance aggression. If that is your problem, you need to ask your vet for a referral to an animal behaviorist.
