Honest Scholarship

Following scholarship in the fields of Biblical Theology and Interpretation can be quite a daunting task to say the least, and a veritable labyrinth or bitter rivalry at its worst,but here is scholar quite unlike any other. Having grown from Pentecostal and Mennonite traditions into a category quite his own, Martin Mittelstadt (MM from this point) presents an honest analysis of the interpretation of Luke-Ats in the Pentecostal tradition. Viewing also non-Pentecostal sources, and taking care also to include critques and criticisms from mainstream scholarship, MM shows the growth of scholars in the fields and their impact upon it. This work also provides a condensed history of the Pentecostal tradition, important to those who would otherwise be unaware of its origins. Thoughtful and well researched, MM writes in a style that provides masterfully concise clarity and yet holds one's attention as well as a NY Times best seller. Recommend for anyone as learning aid for Luke-Acts related study, biblical interpretation, or Pentecostal history. I'm looking forward to later monologues from Dr. Mittelstadt.

Great book with versatile approach to Pentecostal research in Luke-Acts

"Reading Luke-Acts in the Pentecostal Tradition" was an awesome book, and it opened my eyes to the extent of Pentecostal research on Luke-Acts that is available. Part one was a great introduction, especially for those who are not familiar with the origins of Pentecostalism. Part two was good because it showed the issues that Pentecostals most vehemently defend. Part two, I believe, showed how Pentecostals were "backed into a corner" by James Dunn. He was not merely challenging a doctrine in Pentecostalism; he was challenging the very foundation of it. The scholars that were mentioned wrote some great material on the subject, and they attempted to refute Dunn's arguments. Part three was probably my favorite section because it dealt with a plethora of other issues that are important to Pentecostals. Part four was great because it showed how Pentecostal scholars are starting to produce some good material in academia.

Overall, the book was excellent because it was balanced: it provided new information and listed relevant scholars and their works. One could read this book and learn about how Pentecostals view Luke-Acts, where to find information on the subject, and the extent to which Pentecostal scholars have already gone in researching Luke-Acts. I highly recommend it!

About the Author
Lindsey Vonn is an Olympic gold medal—winning alpine ski racer and a member of the U.S. Ski Team. The most successful female skier in history, she holds four overall World Cup titles. She was also an NBC news correspondent during the 2014 Winter Olympics, and is the founder of the Lindsey Vonn Foundation. She is currently training for the 2018 Winter Olympics, for which she has been named an International Games Ambassador. She lives in Vail, Colorado.

I am glad I read it before giving it to my teen daughter.....

I heard an interview with Lindsey Vonn on NPR, and I was surprised to find myself impressed with her take on our culture's crazy obsession with female beauty which results in many women feeling they have no value unless the world finds them beautiful. I know very little about Lindsey Vonn outside of her impressive skiing accomplishments, so I was so excited at the thought of an athlete, who happens to be beautiful, refuse to allow her beauty to be the thing that defines her. Well, imagine my surprise when I purchased this book, and found page after page of what appeared to be glib exercise and diet advice, all with a focus on being lean, toned, and yes, beautiful. This interspersed with glamour shots of Lindsey, in tons of make up, hair blown out like a Maxim photoshoot, and the addition of a couple of chapters devoted to make up and hair. Huh? Yes, she is strong, and yes, she is beautiful, but it seems as if she, or the person who created the concept for this book, plays down her strength and plays up her beauty and sex appeal. Crazy mixed message. During the same NPR interview, a caller referenced Vonn's instagram account and claimed the exercise routines that appear there "motivate (the caller) to go the extra mile in the gym". Again, given Lindsey's apparent appeal to find value beyond beauty in women, I was surprised to find her instagram account filled with loads of super sexy bikini photos, and very little evidence of "strength". It would be fantastic to see a female athlete, who also happens to be beautiful, resist the urge to appeal to the lowest common denominator of society by proving her sex appeal, because to me that reinforces the message that even astonishingly talented female athletes aren't "good enough" unless they can prove they are sexy to men too. Disappointing, and not a book I want my daughter to read.

Loved It!

After suffering two ACL injuries and being able to come back stronger than ever, I love Lindsey's take on the mental and physical aspects of going through an injury. The nutritional guidance is so spot on and really drives home the point there is no one size fits all meal plan that will help you lose AND maintain the weight lost! That has to all come from you and should be based around your preferences! Loved going through the exercises and seeing ones I can incorporate into my day to day routine! The book is overall 10/10 and exactly what I wish all women would pick up when they decide to start working out or changing their lifestyle!

These cards are utterly useless!

These flashcards are useless. Not all of the main rules and exceptions are included and I noticed that several of the rule statements were incorrect or were missing elements. The whole point of getting flashcards is to be certain that one is memorizing all of the necessary rules, not wasting time on immaterial rules, and learning all of the elements of the rules. After I found so many errors, I lost all confidence that these cards would help me study properly.

Wealth of Information

The Standard Catalog of American Cars really sets the
standard to an automotive history book. The information is
overwhelming, and you will find yourself glued to the book
any chance you get.It's also a great book for anyone looking
for a used domestic automobile. It lets you find the right
car, and gives you options that you can look for while
shopping for your car. This is not a book for page flippers.
But it will fill your head with a wealth of information.

Exhaustive and informative

This book is not for everyone. Flammang and Kowalke have given us not merely a reference book, but a sort of "living history" of the American automobile industry's most challenging era. It's great fun to track the changes in American cars from the North American Vinyl-Backed Road Pigs of the mid-70s through the confusing transitional years of the 80s, on into the rebirth of the American auto industry in the 90s. Reading this book not only shows you how the way cars are built has changed; you also get a sense of how the way cars are sold has changed.
The reason this book is not for everyone is that this is essentially an encyclopedia. There's a section for every American automaker, and within those sections, a section for every model year. Thus you can learn what makes, say, a 1978 Chevy Impala different from the 1979 models. Or you can read about the travails of the Ford Motor Company in the late 70s and see how they dug themselves out of a rut with their products. Flammang and Kowalke have done a good job researching this book and finding telling little factoids to help illustrate where each company was at in a given year.
This book is also a boon to collectors, as it gives fairly complete production numbers. You can learn about ultra-rare body styles, option packages, and the like.
I've only got one quibble: the authors exclude any discussion of "captive imports" (cars produced by foreign manufacturers but sold with American names, like the Dodge Colt and Ford Fiesta). I can understand their rationale, but there are future collectibles among these cars, and it's been a *long* time since the Standard Guide to Imported Cars has been updated. On the whole, though, this is a good book for any hard-core auto enthusiast, and one of the best rainy-day reads I've got.
