Khalil Rafati is a speaker, author, and health-and-wellness entrepreneur. He has been a dog walker, a nanny, a car detailer, a furniture maker, a rehab counselor, a restaurant manager, and a drug dealer.

Loving What Is

I first heard about Khalil's inspirational story on the Rich Roll podcast and I was compelled to learn more about his story because he emanates an incredible peace and calm. In particular, I was moved by his ability to forgive the people in his childhood who had caused the traumas which ended up pushing him toward a reckless life of drug addiction. His acceptance/surrender of his past allowed me to start moving toward my own journey of forgiveness and self-acceptance. His book can be deeply healing for anyone because its underlying themes of unmet childhood needs, trauma, self-acceptance, redemption, friendship and finding significance are universal. The fact his life is particularly fascinating being under the employ of multiple celebrities, the depths of drug addiction and finding a life of purpose, service and love. Without spoiling the book, the amount of serendipity in this story is incredible and beautiful, and redemptive.

Powerful

This is probably one of the best addiction books I have ever read (and I have read hundreds of them!) I myself have been in recovery for 4 years. I was a raging alcoholic and I have 2 nephews (ages 20 and 23) who are addicted to meth and heroin and are both sitting in prison at this very moment. That is the very reason I chose to read this book....I wanted to gain more insight on what fuels a heroin addict. My family has been torn apart for many years, thanks to addiction. I only pray that once my nephews are out of prison, they will see the light just as Khalil did.

Why Annie and I Wrote This Book:
Cultural pressures among peers too often discourage interest in the sciences, especially among girls. We wrote this book because we felt that the narrative hook of adventuring on the moon could generate more interest in the physical sciences and in space exploration. That and we think our readers will have one wild ride!

Intended Audience:
Andromeda's Moon is a "hard science fiction" novel intended for ages 9 and up. The book is a collaboration between a 12-year-old daughter and her 39-year-old father.

Scientific Accuracy:
Scientific and technical details were reviewed and amended by experts, most notably astrophysicist Dr. Michelle Thaller at NASA's Education division and Constance Adams, a Space Architect whose work has included designing the TransHab module for the International Space Station. Andromeda's Moon carefully integrates scientific detail into the storyline, paying particular attention to the unique physical characteristics of the moon and space travel.

Key themes include the following:

• The effects of low and zero gravity on objects and the human body.
• The implications of operating in a near-vacuum environment, e.g., A vacuum cannot conduct heat and speech is inaudible.

After touching down on the lunar colony, Andromeda struggles to adapt to the new environment. She faces familiar pre-teen issues: finding new friends, coping with bullying, missing home, making tough choices, and growing independent from her now-distant father.

Andromeda's Moon features strong, smart female lead characters that drive the storyline, instead of hovering passively at the edges. Interesting Plot

I have a love/hate relationship with the mystery genre. I love watching the logic of who done it, and trying to stay one step ahead of the mystery solvers. However, I hate it when the mystery solvers are sticking their noses where they don't belong, especially if the mystery solvers are kids, and there is someone else supposed to be solving this mystery. If they make the person who is supposed to be solving the case look petty and incompetent, I like it even less.

This book fell firmly into that category. There were times when I put it down and I almost didn't return. The only thing that kept me coming back was a desire to know if my suspicion about who the villain was was correct. I had had the guy picked out for the villain the moment they introduced him. I was correct, by the way, but I won't tell you who it was. You can figure it out for yourself.

This book was advertised as being full of hilarious moments ... and I suppose it is ... if your idea of hilarious is getting laughs from someone else's pain. There were moments I did laugh, but most of the time I just cringed or rolled my eyes. Mom says I talked to this book a lot.

I had no love for the main character, Andromeda, and very little sympathy for her plight. The reason for her getting stuck on the space ship was her own fault. She was being disrespectful of authority, especially of her father. She probably could have avoided getting trapped on that space ship by simply not taking her cat with her. That cat did NOTHING for the story, other than getting her trapped on the space ship, and I would frankly like to know how she zip-corded while carrying a cat cage. My mental image just falls short. I did finally figure out why the cat came though. You see, this was a co-write and one of the authors was a twelve year-old girl. Every twelve-year-old girl has her favorite animal, Annie's just happens to be a cat, and obviously the cat just had to come along as a result.

Andromeda, or Andrie as she was often called, reminded me of a spoiled brat. She was manipulative, conniving, disrespectful and all around left me with an uncomfortable feeling in the pit of my stomach. The only thing that ever induced me to feel sorry for her was when it was revealed that her mother got lost on the far side of the moon. There was only one thing that she did that I at all applauded was when she stood up for a girl who was being teased.

This book is also advertised as being scientifically accurate, as it was reviewed by someone from NASA. I'm sure that, on all of those points it probably was. However, something I always wondered was why technology is so much more advanced on the moon than it is on earth. I can understand why the stuff that involves people not weighing as much would not be on earth, but I would have thought that the classrooms on earth would have much of the same technology as does the ones on earth, especially Andrie's school, as she just struck me as someone who runs in high technology circles. I mean, her dad designed the rocket she rode on!

Now, this wasn't a bad book, and I did eventually come back every time I put it down, and I probably would read a sequel if one came out, but there were a lot of things that left a bad taste in my mouth. Maybe a twelve-year-old who goes to a public schoool wouldn't have a problem with it, but I, a homeschooled 17 year old, did.

Just the right amount of headstrong girl to explorer (add a touch of getting into trouble)

I bought this for my granddaughter, but I preread all JV stories (just in case of inappropriate scenarios or language). This is book 1 and the author did a great job on plot and content. I can hardly wait for my granddaughter to read so we can add her thoughts to this review.

Excelent and very personal lesson from Grisman

Imagine that you're in a small lesson room at your local music store. You're tuning up your mandolin waiting for your teacher to come in. The door opens and your teacher for today's lesson is David Grisman! That's the feeling I get when listening to and working with these CD's. It truely feels like you're sitting down one on one with the master and he's showing you his stuff.
Sure, it's David teaching you his own tunes, but there's more to it than that. He's also teaching you the reasons why he does what he does. He teaches harmoney leads on songs like "Dawg's Bull" but he also teaches why those harmony leads work and how to write your own.
One of my favorite sections is for the song "Minor Swing" where he discusses chord substitutions. This is just good basic jazz music theory presented in a meaningful way and applied to an actual song rather than just presented as a theory.
That brings up another point. The printed music is just the basics of the songs. When David talks about chord substitutions and so on you'll need to get out your notebook and write down what he's saying on the CD because many times it's not written in the book. But that's another reason why this feels like a private lesson. You'll have to listen, take notes, and practice to get the most out of this series, just like a real lesson.
So get out your instrument, tuner, metronome, notebook, and CD player. You're about to have about 6+ hours of intense mandolin lessons. I hope you enjoy it as much as I did.

Fairly advanced lessons, not for beginners

I am learning mandolin after playing violin for many years; I can pick out a tune pretty easily but am not familiar with chords or mandolin technique. These CDs and the book contain a wealth of knowledge, but they are pretty advanced. There are discussions of double stops, slides, and different hand positions (first, second) within the first 10 minutes or so. Also, the previous reviewer is correct that you need to take copious notes. There are a lot of quick references to things like "third finger on the 8th fret, second finger on the third fret of the fourth string," etc., which are hard to process quickly. It would be wonderful if Dave Grisman could put together some simpler lessons! I am giving this four stars because of the wealth of knowledge contained in the CDs, but I would give it three stars for someone at my skill level, and less for rank beginners.

Another great book from Peter Singer

Dr. Singer's books are always engaging, and this book, co-authored Allan Friedman, continues that tradition.

This book is written to be consumed by any thoughtful reader -- it is not a deep dive in UNIX system administration challenges, it not full of computer acronyms, it does not require an advanced degree in computer science.

This book clearly educates the reader about cybersecurity issues, and then expands upon this discussion to enable the reader to conceptualize the challenges of the subject. A good example of this is their Short History of the Internet, which is a clear and concise and enjoyable read by itself. This history includes, in layman's terms, evolution, funding agencies, control entities, architecture, Al Gore, governance, cryptographic keys, and more. With this foundation the authors then expand into many cybersecurity challenges, like WikiLeaks and a variety of security threats.

I particularly liked the discussions on attribution, cybercrimes, and cyber terrorism -- these are not simple issues, and the authors articulate some of the complexities of attribution that make cybersecurity so difficult.

The authors wrap up the book by defining the Five Key Trends that Affect the Future of Cybersecurity – Cloud Computing, Big Data, Mobile, Cyberspace Demographics, and Internet-of-Things (IoT). These trends all increase the problem space of cybersecurity, and the authors define how these trends will drive an even higher demand for security in our future systems.

With this history, description of threats, frameworks, and trends, the authors truly accomplish their goal of delivering a primer of what one needs to know about cybersecurity and cyberwar.

Balanced and Accessible, but Dry At Times

Not too long ago I read the book @War: The Rise of the Military-Internet Complex by Shane Harris, which was a great book and brought home to me the rising influence of private cybersecurity and cyberwarfare interests over the government's internet policies. Though I enjoyed that book a lot, I must admit that it was relatively biased in its coverage. In contrast, this book is a far more balanced look at the issues of cybersecurity and cyberwar. Co-written by P.W. Singer, who wrote Wired for War: The Robotics Revolution and Conflict in the 21st Century one of my favorite books, this book takes a question and answer approach to the topic. For example, a subsection will say something like "What is cybersecurity?" and the authors will spend the next few pages answering the question. Like most people I was looking for answers to my personal LAN security issues and picked this book in the hopes of getting a deeper understanding of how to secure my network. But, I got an even better deal instead. This book covers the entire state of cyber security issues from car theft by network interference to Cyberwar.

The issue of network security has become global in scope and there are no political boundaries in Cyberspace. Nothing separates us personally from being raided by a thief whether he be an individual using an electronic jamer to keep your car unlocked or an employee of the Chinese government using commercial routers to collect personal data against you.

The misuse and abuse of Cyberspace is predicated on the natural openness of the design of the Ethernet. Education about the current situation is our primary defense against those who would use this valuable tool against us. And this book does an excellent job of appraising us about the dangers and defenses inherent in this communications medium.

This is not a book about how to setup the network security switches on your operating system. This is the book to tell you what has been happening in the entire world of Cyberspace that can affect you directly. Before you can defend yourself you need to know what the threat really is.

Most of the book is spent covering the current world level security threat complex. With the exception of Denial of Service and RoboLensing attacks, the book gives the reader very good advice on how to deny the attackers effective access to your computer network. The general answer lies here.

As in personal self defense, the answer comes through more effective communication with the security community and application of proper security measures. Reducing your threat cross section by using the approaches detailed in the book will help you to protect your data and your sleep.

Less Romantic heat than a Disney Movie..... NOT A ROMANCE !!!

If your just looking for an interesting story, Like Vampires,Were-Wolves ! Fay and Fairies and the like and don't mind a sweet but deeply clueless h ? ( I mean deeply clueless virgin kinda clueless, like just has a bit ,ore clues at times that Cher from the movie "Clueless") then this might be the story for you.... I kinda really like the story per say but what pisses me off is this being called a " romance" ;( Seriously DISNEY movies have had more romance than this!!!! Ariel was more excited to kiss Prince Eric in the "Little Mermaid" than this!!!! There are 100's of books out there where women are chasing after their "stepbrothers" with vim and vigor and Vicky is acting like the title of "boss" is some unbreakable line that just can't be crossed no matter what they've seen and done and been thru together ...... He's a 900 yr. old Vampire who's supposedly in love with her but even after admitting it out loud he still just calls her his assistant even in his head....
WTF ... No offense but I think even an Amish " romance" novel would have more heat than this!!! Even with all his supposed lusting for her he's never give her more than hugs and some chaste and or healing kisses..... These to have the intensity of two wet matches.... As just a story I'd give this three and a half to four stars maybe, but as a romance ? I give it -0 ...... This a romance with all story and NO HEAT AND OR ROMANCE!!!! Two book and they still call each other Mr. Ritter and Miss Westernrly .
Ugh!!!!! I'm not sure how much farther just Curiosity will take me... Her adopted pet shows a 100% More affection for her than she in her complete and utter cluelessness shows the H and for the most part the H shows her...
Story good ... Romance non existent !!!!

Still seriously hooked

So I wasn't sure if the second could book could keep up with the first . There were a few scenes that were incorrect , like when you watch a movie and the door is open only a second later it's closed. Yeah I catch those things and they drive me nuts . But altogether another spectacular journey . Loved the new twist on the hell hounds .I'm not saying more because it's a spoiler . Again I was kept laughing , yelling , and no waying through the book. Just a fun read. I love the humanity and how humble the characters are . Strength is not only a physical form, it's the psychological and this blended both

I am still really enjoying this series. There are a lot of characters, but somehow I an keep track of who is human, vampire, werewolf or fae. And, even though the point-of-view can change paragraph-to-paragraph, it isn't jarring & it's easy to tell whose perspective I'm reading.

This is a mystery without feeling like clues are dropped too obviously, the relationship with Darien & Vicky feels natural, and the fantasy element is explained well--without feeling like there are big "info dumps" of how the supernatural works in this world.

I am really looking forward to the next installment.
