One of the Three "Classical" perspectives on Brazil

Freyre's Masters and Slaves forms what is considered by many to be a trilogy of books published in the 1930's that revolutionized Brazilian Studies. The other are two books,[by other authors]... Freyre, the most popular and readable of the three, was a Pernambucano (from the sugar cane regions around Recife) and often blurs the distinction between Brazil as a whole and sugar-cane regions of Brazil. His methodology reflects his education, a US oriented 1930's anthropological perspective (he was a student of Franz Boas). This book in particular treats a very specific historical event: the development of a sugar-based agricultural economy in late 1500s, early 1600s in northeastern coastal Brazil. The book makes the generalization that Brazilian culture as a whole evolved from this cultural base, and places little importance on the parallel development of cattle-based cultures in the northeastern interior or the primitive jungle trading activities of Sao Paulo's city fathers (Raposo Tavares, etc).
Because of its focus on a very provincial-specific economy and culture, I would criticize Freyre for offering a very incomplete study of "Brazilian Civilization" in this book. In his defense, however, this book is too often read as a stand-alone study, when in fact Freyre intended for it to form a trilogy with another two books...The former traces how the rural sugar-based culture of early northeastern Brazil affected and was affected by the emergence of cities and urban life-patterns in places like Recife, Salvador, and Rio de Janeiro in the mid 1600s through the end of the 18th century. The latter book follows the study further, through the independence period and especially the twilight of the Empire, establishment of the Republic in the 188o's. If you read one, I recommend all three books to appreciate Freyre's thesis, that the original sugar-culture that developed and was discussed in Masters and Slaves had a lasting impact on Brazil's evolution as a whole, even in areas and regions where sugar cane and slavery were never established bases for economic development. This vision of Brazil remains incomplete without an understanding of Sao Paulo and the south, a region which today is arguably the strongest center of influence in the country. To complete that, I would recommend some books by [other authors]

About writing style

Gilberto Freyre is now considered one of the grestest thinkers of Brazil, alongside S�rgio Buarque de Hollanda. As mrs. Laidman recognized, we can't look for his work as if it's been written yesterday: when many people all over Americas (both North and South) believed that "whitening population" was the solution to all problems; when fascists and nazis took power in Europe, Freyre looked at mixture of races and saw it as a positive feature, something that could lead our people to a better place, God knows where, but better. During the 60's and 70's his ideas were fiercely attacked by new generations of sociologists and historians - and that's good, that's how science advances. But, they attacked him, mostly, for his political positions. Today, people rediscovered Freyre, understood him on his own time. Yes, his presumptions about sex addicted people, indian women burning in desire and so on are considered today too much. But the essence, the mix of races and cultures as a positive fact, the understanding of Portuguese government as something absent and masters of plantions, on the absence of State, rulling their slaves and families and regions, masters as the actual power in colonial Brazil, is considered a remarkable way to understand our country and it's people. By the way, many people in Black Movement also recognizes Freyre and his role in understand Brazil's black influences. Despite his presumptions, Freyre is more up to date than ever.

When Gilberto Freyre first launched this essay, 1933, it revolutioned the way brazilians thought about themselves. Until then, we understood us as a "white nation", with some black people who, eventually, would disappear. Black people's only importance were as slaves, planting sugar cane or coffee. Freyre brings to History black people's contributions: culturally, genetically. Most of all, underlines that brazilians are a mix of cultures and races, not a pure race, and it is a positive feature for as all.

About the Author
For Elaine N. Marieb, R.N., Ph.D., taking the needs of nursing and other allied health students into account has always been an integral part of her teaching style. Dr. Marieb began her teaching career at Springfield College, where she taught anatomy & physiology to physical education majors. She then joined the faculty of the Biological Science Division of Holyoke Community College in 1969 after receiving her Ph.D. in zoology from the University of Massachusetts at Amherst. While teaching at Holyoke Community College, Dr. Marieb pursued her nursing education, which culminated in a Master of Science degree with a clinical specialization in gerontology from the University of Massachusetts. This experience, along with continual feedback from health care professionals (including generations of former students taught by Dr. Marieb), has inspired the unique perspective and accessibility for which this book is known.

Dr. Marieb’s commitment to students extends beyond teaching and writing. Recognizing the challenges students face, Dr. Marieb contributes to the New Directions Program at Holyoke Community College by funding a staffed drop-in center and by providing several full-tuition scholarships each year for women who are returning to college after a hiatus or attending college for the first time. She also funds the E.N. Marieb Science Research Awards at Mount Holyoke College (which promotes research by undergraduate science majors) and has underwritten renovation and updating of one of the biology labs in Mount Holyoke’s Clapp Laboratory. Recognizing the severe national shortage of nursing faculty, Dr. Marieb also underwrites the Nursing Scholars of the Future Grant Program at the University of Massachusetts at Amherst. In 1994, Dr. Marieb received the Benefactor Award from the National Council for Resource Development, American Association of Community Colleges, which recognizes her ongoing sponsorship of student scholarships, faculty teaching awards, and other academic contributions to Holyoke Community College. In May 2000, the science building at Holyoke Community College was named in her honor.

Dr. Marieb is an active member of the Human Anatomy and Physiology Society (HAPS) and the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS). Additionally, while actively engaged as an author, Dr. Marieb serves as a consultant for the Pearson Education Interactive Physiology� CD-ROM series. When not involved in academic pursuits, Dr. Marieb is a world traveler and has vowed to visit every country on this planet. Never buy this!

I thought buying his book on my iPad Kindle app, would be cool. I thought how convenient not to have to lug yet another text book around with me. And I may have been right, but this particular book is a workbook and I'll never buy another workbook in Kindle format again. Kindle doesn't recognize the difference between workbooks and other books and it is not possible to print from this document; something I didn't realize until it was too late to return it.

I love having a kindle and I read books on it for leisure frequently, but I will never again buy a Kindle workbook and wish I had not purchased this one!

Very helpful laboratory manual

I had to buy this lab manual for my entry Anatomy & Physiology class. This laboratory manual explains concepts in a highly detailed yet direct manner. There are very helpful activities in this manual that will be quite useful when it comes down to studying. The tables, charts, and pictures within this manual are very to-the-point (they beat the actual bush instead of AROUND the bush).

I personally wouldn't recommend buying this in a kindle format if you are going to be using this in most laboratory room settings, as this is a LAB MANUAL. Please think about that before buying this. This is a highly recommended buy coming from a college student who has taken multiple biology classes!
EDIT: As another reviewer said, it would be helpful if this manual came with colored pictures instead of black and white. Apparently some versions have colored pictures (students who bought from the school bookstore got colored pictures apparently!), although this would not be known unless the seller specifies this fact in their description of this product.

Just Torrent the 5th Edition Online

Yes, it's true. The 5th edition is floating somewhere online for free. I ordered the 6th edition from my college bookstore, and after discovering the 5th edition online, I immediately returned the book. The 5th and 6th editions are EXACTLY THE SAME! Trust me, nothing is different between the two except a couple updated anatomy diagrams. Nothing special or significant at all. I really hate when authors do this. It's such a money-making scheme that I'm so sick and tired of seeing this happen to the students. If you're going to update a book, completely rearrange the whole thing. Add a ton of different photos, add different text, whatever. Please don't update a book every 2 or 3 years when you don't need to, and in anatomy (which NEVER changes, and probably won't change unless humans become subject to massive nuclear fallout), you don't need this kind of updating at all.

Every word in the 6th edition, down to the exercises and pre-lab questions, are exactly alike. Believe me, I had the PDF 5th edition open on my computer and the 6th edition open on my desk. After performing a rigorous comparative analysis, they're 98.9% alike (the difference being only with a few updated anatomy photos, and I mean a FEW). Even my anatomy professor said it was ok to use the 5th edition, although (in her words) "you might want to see more updated pictures". In other words, the 5th edition is just fine.

Students, you need to rise up and take back the education that's rightfully yours. Please take full advantage of this millennium's e-book craze, because that's what's leading to torrenting. This is the only method whereby students can possibly fight back against ever-increasing textbook prices.

Review: Indian Political Trials 1775 - 1947

Political trials are characterized by an attempt to foist a partisan political decision via a judicial process. They are neatly stage-managed at the behest of the authority through the vicarious vocal chords of the judges to give a veneer of judicial respectability. They are generally a sham, in all respects, but occasionally the stage-managed trials backfire on the authorities as well.

Pre-independent India had a taste of many such stage-managed political trials and A.G. Noorani selects twelve of these - starting from the execution of Raja Nandakumar of Bengal by Warren Hastings in 1775, to the arrest of Sheikh Abdullah by the state of Kashmir in 1947 - in his book "Indian Political Trials 1775 - 1947".

In this book, A.G. Noorani painstakingly documents the turbulent difficulties underwent by the prosecutors and the persecuted in the political trials staged in pre-independence India. The book is thoroughly researched and pieces together information from the historically visible and obscure documents and provides a rich portrayal of the political and judicial conduct of the British in India from 1775 till 1947. After reading the book one cannot but simultaneously admire and despise the British for who they were.

Sleep no more

I have stumbled through 60 years of confusion and questions. As an African-American it has been disheartening to live in a world where you simply exist. No knowledge of history or ancestory beyond slavery,stripped of eveything that is the basis and core of who you are. Buying and reading this book was the best thing I ever did....it has awakened me from a deep sleep. I intend to re-read this book and others like it in my quest for the truth.

The Standard of Care for Dental Office Medical Emergencies

This is the definitive textbook on medical emergencies in the dental office.

Dentists do not get a comprehensive medical education simply because there is no time for such a detailed education in the 4+ years of dental school. This book fills in the gap for the dental practitioner. The book is organized in such a fashion so that the dental staff learns to recognize a dental emergency early, and then according to specific algorithms, the appropriate treatment is rendered (until emergency staff arrives). Keeping the patient alive until emergency care arrives is the primary duty of the dental staff. Too many dentists buy an emergency kit full of emergency drugs (that they don't perhaps know how to use properly), yet somehow feel they are covered from liability. Having an emergency kit and not knowing how to use it actually creates more liability for the dental office.

This is a book that every dental professional should examine page by page from cover to cover until a firm understanding of recognizing medical emergencies is ingrained. I bought this copy so that I could review it each year, as one loses knowledge that is not used. Since medical emergencies (thankfully) do not happen each week or month, knowledge of medical emergency treatment slowly slips away like a leaky sieve. It has to be bolstered regularly, and fortunately, this is the book that the dental professional can rely upon to recognize dental/medical emergencies, and then render appropriate treatment. Once mastered, this book'sinformation will give the dentist and his/her staff confidence in treating virtually all medical emergencies that could happen in the dental environment. Dr. Stanley Malamed is the authority in this field, and his book is an absolute essential for every dental office. Better to have this book than a kit full of emergency medications!

This book is a really good review and reference to keep on hand. It also has full color flow charts and the new CPR guidelines indexed at the back. Great resource to have in any office, especially those that treat elderly patients, or provide IV sedation.
