A MUST READ for anyone who is serious about learning how to do Hypnosis Parts Therapy... the RIGHT WAY!

This is the most detailed, pro-level book I've ever read on the subject of Parts Therapy. Roy Hunter is in my opinion one of the best hypnosis practitioners and teachers in the world. His writing is thorough, detailed and understandable... making it learnable for people at any level. He goes out of his way to not only teach you how to do parts therapy, but also what to do when things don't go "by the book". Plus, he provides solid, real-world examples of every step in the process. This will absolutely be my "go to" resource from now on when it comes to doing Parts Therapy.

A Feast For The Parts Of You That Need Integration & A Voice

This is a masterful work that step by step details the authors frame work for working on integrating the in congruent parts of our inner life. It can be used by hypnotherapists, as well as counselors and laymen for gleaning principles. But like most of these type works you will get the most from it by experimenting with it on your self with the questions and naming of those inner parts and listening to their voices, needs, motivations and wisdom. I believe you would be most able to be healing to others with these principles after making personal application for integrating your own inner voices and parts that conflict and help them to better negotiate. If you imagine a counseling session of a family and the different needs and parts and you helping their learning to understand each other and work together you get the gist of this book only the family is in side of each individual person. I instantly found myself becoming aware of deeper parts of myself and the naming the parts, list of questions and negotiation ideas are excellent to promote dialog and release. It seems that life challenges us continually to the experiences that must struggle with what is wisdom and balance. It many times involves the integrating of what first appears to be opposites but really reveal themselves to be balancing halves that when listened to and gleaned from open up a healing middle pathway and journey being all that you are. On another note there is excellent principles for using hypnosis for smoking cessation and getting past stuck points of the conflicting motivations of our inner parts.

This was a truly great book, everything was well explained but never long-winded. My only problem was that my copy was covered in ink dust, which gave me a rash. I ended up wearing gloves. This is obviously a printer issue, and has nothing to do with the excellent text.

Jacobs set out on this delightfully eccentric endeavor attempting to become the "smartest person in the world," although he agrees smart doesn't mean wise. Apart from the sheer pleasure of scaling a major intellectual mountain, Jacobs figured reading the encyclopedia from beginning to end would fill some gaps in his formal education and greatly increase his "quirkiness factor." Reading alphabetically through whole topics he never knew existed meant he'd accumulate huge quantities of trivia to insert into conversations with unsuspecting victims. As his wife shunned him and cocktail party guests edged away, Jacobs started testing his knowledge in a hilarious series of humiliating adventures: hobnobbing at Mensa meetings, shuffling off to chess houses, trying out for the American Crossword Puzzle Tournament, visiting his old prep school, even competing on Who Wants to Be a Millionaire. Adult/High School - When Jacobs, a pop-culture junkie and magazine editor, got a bee in his bonnet to read the entire abridged set of the Encyclopedia Britannica to stave off the decline of his recalled knowledge, his wife, family, and coworkers looked on with disbelief, amusement, and annoyance. They thought he'd give up on his quest, but fortunately he did not, for his recap manages to impart the joys of learning, along with a lot of laughs. The alphabetical arrangement of his book allows Jacobs to share highlights, many of which show his fixation on the morbid, the insane, and the grotesque in history. Cort�s had syphilis. Descartes had a fetish for cross-eyed women. Throughout, the author digresses with anecdotes about such things as his trip to a Mensa meeting, his visit with Alex Trebek, and (mainly) his wife's attempts to get pregnant. While the pregnancy woes probably won't hold the same resonance with teens as with adults, they are all short, and soon there is another funny or gross item. As Jacobs wraps up, he leaves readers with the sense of satisfaction and wistfulness that often occurs when finishing a particularly satisfying book, only multiplied by the magnitude of what he has accomplished. We’re in looking glass territory here, as many reviewers spent as much time on New York Times Book Review Queenan’s hack-job as they did on Esquire editor Jacobs’s book. Reviews of reviews are always awkward, especially when they flock to the defense of a book as harmless as Jacobs’s. Maybe Know-It-All isn’t an intellectual treatise; but, then again, it isn’t meant to be. Its pop culture-obsessed author clearly is out for some fun, often at his own expense. The alphabetical structure and wisecracking prose only underscore the playfulness of The Know-It-All, even if it gets certain factoids wrong. Which begs the question: what side of the "A" volume did Queenan wake up on? One must assume the backside.

This is a narrative of one man's adventure in reading the Encyclopedia Britannica. For select entries, the author expounds on the content and history and its application in his world (his wife, his job, etc.).

It is humorous, enlightening, and fun. If you are a trivia or reference book enthusiast than this is your comfort reading! It has hilarity and heart. And even I, a reference book junkie learned a thing or too! The narrative is pleasant and makes the effort more enjoyable than just reading about entries.

Jacobs has brought stunt authoring to the academics... or at least Jeopardy watchers! It makes you want to go back when information searching began with sifting through pages of a heavy set of leather bound books.

Light and Surprisingly Engaging Read

Did those three factual tidbits entertain you? Does the prospect of reading 400 pages of similar fare interspersed with some memoir-ish reflections and anecdotes appeal to you? If your answers are in the affirmative then you will probably enjoy The Know-It-All by A.J. Jacobs. The book chronicles Jacobs' attempt to read the complete Encyclopedia Britannica and his more-difficult task of keeping the reader interested during the whole affair. Jacobs' largely succeeds with the latter, and The Know-It-All is a worthwhile read to anyone looking for a light read instilled with plenty of trivia.

The idea was sparked out of Jacobs' wish to reengage with his intellectual side, which had been languishing a bit due to his job as a magazine editor for the likes of Entertainment Weekly and Esquire. Jacobs has found his niche in the "stunt journalism" genre, as his other books include Drop Dead Healthy (where he attempts to become the healthiest human ever in a highly readable and engaging fashion) and The Year of Living Biblically (where he attempts to become the most Biblical human ever I guess, I haven't read that one yet). Reading the encyclopedia (when some skimming is inevitable) clearly is a bit pedestrian in comparison in terms of total commitment and strenuousness. Realizing this, Jacobs doesn't really focus much on the physical act of reading the volume, though he does mention several times that it is often incredibly boring and repetitive. Instead, the book is largely a vehicle for Jacobs to riff on some fun facts he encounters, pursue some semi-relevant intellectual activities like attending Mensa meetings and playing chess, and reflecting a bit on the nature of intelligence and knowledge with some more personal passages.

The book is organized in a slightly unorthodox fashion. Every chapter covers a letter, and Jacobs recounts his efforts from a-ak (a genre of Korean court music) to Zywiec (a small town of 32,000 in Poland). Each chapter is further divided into individual entries, where Jacobs cultivates several usually fascinating factual morsels, such as the three that kicked off this review. There is never any drama regarding whether he will actually finish the book, which is appreciated given that he could really just have skimmed everything and we would be none the wiser. It's not like we the collective reading public were going to quiz him at the end or something. The format is mainly a success, as it still provides Jacobs with the freedom to tangentially relate particular entries to stories from his past or some of his scholarly field trips undertaken during his quest.

Tackling the Britannica, and describing how one goes about such an endeavor, is something that could easily fail in the hands of the wrong writer. Thankfully, Jacobs does a pretty commendable job of maintaining interest. Like Drop Dead Healthy, Jacobs and his immediate family and friends are featured prominently and these segments that focus on the author's attempts to one-up his intellectual brother-in-law help keep the book from becoming a mere list of random trivia. The Mensa meetings, school visits, and chess games also break up the monotony, though some asides such as Jacobs' appearance on Who Wants to Be a Millionaire (the book was published in 2004 when the show had already passed any shreds of cultural relevance or importance) fell a bit flat. But overall Jacobs does an excellent job touring the reader through the highlights of the Britannica and the prose is snappy, light, and self-effacing, something he has likely perfected through a career in magazines. While the book is facetiously titled and Jacobs often makes light of his deteriorating levels of "useful" knowledge, he does let his more highbrow and Ivy League education show during some clever and legitimately funny sections. I felt that the book lost some steam near the end but that it was ultimately an engaging mix of memoir and trivia, in a very similar vein to Drop Dead Healthy, which I also recommend.

In Sum

If you are looking for some light reading and enjoy historical facts with some anecdotes and riffs on pop culture thrown in for good measure then you can certainly do worse than A.J. Jacobs' amusing and even sometimes witty The Know-It-All.

Really, he read the entire encyclopedia.

Very entertaining. A humorous account of a professional writer's pursuit of his goal of reading the entire Encyclopedia Britannica, his wife's tolerance of his objective and progress, and of his family's, friend's and co-workers endorsement and skepticism. Author offers both humorous and profound insights as he works through 22 volumes, 33 thousand pages in his attempt to absorb the entire corpus of human knowledge according to the Encyclopedia Britannica. Many laugh-out-loud moments in this book.

Very interesting topic, and well written book.

Let me start by saying that I read this book right after finishing another book on the same topic, "Nintendo Magic: Winning the Videogame Wars" by Osamu Inoue. While I pretty much enjoyed "Nintendo Magic", and ended up giving it 4 stars in my review, I think that "Playing to wiin" is a much better book, and everyone who is debating between them should definitely pick Daniel Sloans's book.

"Playing to wiin" contains an historical perspective of Nintendo and the video games war. The book takes you chronologically from the first days of Nintendo as a Japanese cards manufacturer, its first deal with branded Disney characters on the cards, and all the way to the world of electronic games and video consoles and software. There are two main reasons to pick this book over the competitor: first, editing-wise, the book provides a chronological perspective of the history, which makes lots of sense and reads a lot better than the other (which goes back and forth in time and includes many repetitions). Second, we also get lots of information on Nintendo's competitors at different parallel time lines (Sega, Sony, Microsoft), which allow us to grasp the market in a more complete way.

However, one has to keep in mind that the video game market is rapidly changing and adapting, and I think the book might become dated in a year or two. For instance, currently it looks like that Nintendo will probably won't survive Apple's surge on its popular hand-hold devices. The first huge crack in its hand-hold market is starting to show with the recent amazing $80 reduction of the 3DS's lunch price, and the declining stock price in the last couple of months. I think Nintendo's immediate future should be as interesting as its history.

I think this book makes an interesting read for everyone who is interested in the industry, but also to young Business schools' graduates who can easily learn a thing or two about somewhat different style of managing a large international business (e.g. keep a large amount of liquid cash on the side for dark days). Overall, for me this is a 5 stars book.

Not a Single Original Source for this Book!

I started reading this book with high hopes and belief in the author, who is apparently a Columbia Journalism school educated correspondent.

As I kept on reading, I was struck that the author HAS NOT INTERVIEWED A SINGLE PERSON FROM NINTENDO. It's a complete cut and paste job!

I was flabbergasted. As someone who is a former journalist herself, I was taught there is no such thing as a single source story. This is an entire book written without a single original interview by the author.

If this is the state of journalism these days, no wonder there is so much distrust of the press. I investigated the author, and he is now a PR man for a Japanese car company (Nissan).

I could not believe that such a book could be published, frankly.

About the Author
Kristine Miller, CFRE, Ministry Strategist with Horizons Stewardship, has assisted churches and nonprofits in fulfilling their visions for ministry for over fifteen years. Ms. Miller was the Director of Stewardship and Planned Giving for the Episcopal Diocese of Michigan and a Senior Vice President with a national stewardship consulting firm. Having worked with hundreds of clients across the country, Ms. Miller has become a nationally-recognized expert in the field of nonprofit organizational leadership and development. Ms. Miller is a prolific writer and frequently been a top-rated speaker at conferences and other events.

A native of Ohio, she did her undergraduate work in Business Administration at the Ohio State University and received her M.B.A. from Northern Illinois University.

Currently Senior Vice President with Horizons Stewardship, Scott McKenzie has over 15 years of experience in development, capital campaigns, vision discernment and conflict management. Prior to his time in consulting, he was a local church pastor and the Director of Stewardship for the Western Pennsylvania Conference United Methodist Church. As a national stewardship consultant, he has worked with a wide variety of denominations including United Methodist, Presbyterian, Lutheran, Episcopal, and Roman Catholic.

Dr. McKenzie believes stewardship is ultimately a question of faith development and discipleship. He teaches stewardship as "grounded in gratitude, revealed in prayer and lived in faith." He holds degrees from Messiah College and United Theological Seminary. His Ph.D. is in spiritual formation from Duquesne University. He lives in York, Pennsylvania.

Walk an entire community into a ministry of financial stewardship

Giving has never been about the money. It never will be. The problem is that people often believe it is about nothing but the money. In "Climb Higher" McKenzie and Miller combine their broad experience to provide the concrete proof.

Yes, the book is geared towards church leaders, but no mistake about it; this volume is all about how regular people can understand what real giving is all about. They simply need to read it and see themselves in one of the many examples the authors employ to demonstrate their concepts, and ask themselves, "What would I do in this circumstance?"

It is that simple. It is that powerful.

Of course, if you are a church leader, "Climb Higher" is also step-by-step guide in the basics of how to walk an entire community into a ministry of financial stewardship. Yet, the big difference between all the other books on stewardship and this one is that McKenzie and Miller begin with nuts and bolts simplicity -- a universal foundation of gratitude. Why gratitude? Because they know through their vast experience that when leaders begin to teach giving they must first get those they teach to recognize that true giving can only begin with a grateful heart for all that God provides.

Finally, to top it off, McKenzie and Miller back their bold warrants with example after example of how their process has worked over the years and then they complete the lessons with real life materials that can actually be used by church leadership.

Personally, after twenty years of working in the field of Christian Stewardship it is truely refreshing to discover this amazing book. Well done, McKenzie and Miller!

The Church and the S-Word

People may inwardly groan at the mention of the word `stewardship,' thinking it means we will be pressured to give more money. This unusual little book goes in a different direction, condensing the whole matter of stewardship to a very simple idea. The essence of that idea is gratitude, prayer and faith all defined in a way that doesn't make you feel like you are being horn-swoggled. What we find we are reading is not about the isolated concept of money but rather a basic look at discipleship which leads away from guilt driven giving to an irresistible desire to give. There's no padding, no filler in this book, and just enough illustrations upon which to memorably hang the reasonable yet radical outline. When McKenzie & Miller finish their treatise, they stop writing. What a novel idea, eh? Even if you were not trying to raise funds or set a new budget, you would find this book useful in guiding others, or yourself, into a simpler, more joyful walk with Christ.

McKenzie and Miller provided local church leaders with a very helpful resource to guide their ministry of financial stewardship. It is easy to read without being shallow. The book has an abundance of "how to" stuff as well as "why" to do it. The why explanations are grounded in the faith and experience of the writers.

This book is about making disciples for the transformation of the world. Discipleship is a matter of the heart, the mind, and the pocketbook. McKenzie and Miller keep reminding us of the holistic dimensions of faith.

As a bonus, their illustrative material is exciting. Many readers will undoubtedly use the story of the golden Buddha of Bangkok the next time they preach or do a lay minute on stewardship. It is excellent!
