Useful MUST-HAVE for any teacher AND a great, easy read

This book exceeded my expectations. I'm a graduate student getting my Masters -- M.Ed. in Curriculum and Instruction. I ordered this book because I HAD TO for a class (the class was Teaching for Cross Cultural Communication). BUT I soon realized that this is a must have for my own personal collection! Any teacher worth their weight and who genuinely cares about making sure they are teaching in an inclusive manner and that all students are a part of what is being taught, making sure all students -- from varying races, cultures, backgrounds, socioeconomic statuses, sexual orientations, abilities, etc. -- can not only see but feel that they and their families/interests are a part of the everyday classroom curriculum should own this book. I've been teaching for 6 years and have focused, as most teachers do, on the academic/social/emotional well-being and growth of my students. This book showed me what has been missing from my teaching and it caused me to change the way I teach. Now I still do what I did before BUT I also add elements from this book to ensure I'm recognizing diversity and other cultures.
Another bonus -- this book READS LIKE A GOOD BOOK! Does not at all read like a boring scholarly regurgitation of facts. GREAT EASY READ.

You Could Spend Days Here

Fantastic book. You can open it up to a random page and be transported to a completely different world and time. You'll keep doing this over and over again, and fortunately it doesn't appear to induce motion sickness. You can also place this volume on the ground and stand on it to see over a crowd. Depending on your height, your mileage may vary. Very happy with this purchase.

This big book is a must have for quotation fans.

Why in the age of Google and an internet flooded with quotations sites would we need a big heavy book of quotations?

One word: serendipity.

With this great book, you can page through and randomly find amazing quotations. Or you can read the book in order, which is chronological. What a way to discover great thinkers, writers and statesmen!

I love to randomly open a page and just see what interesting quote I can find.

Of course the other reason to buy this book is: organization.

It is well indexed by key word and also organized by whom is quoted, in chronological order.

Nicolas Jolley is Professor of Philosophy at the University of California, San Diego. He is also the editor of the forthcoming Oxford Philosophical Texts edition of Locke's Essay Concerning Human Understanding.

Excellent survey of Locke's thought for its audience

Nicholas Jolley has produced a great resource for students first encountering Locke or for those who are familiar with Locke but would like to get more into the details of his philosophical views. This book is intended as an introduction to his thought and is directed at advanced undergraduates and beginning graduate students. It gives enough details to begin work on any of the diverse topics covered in it, with references to direct the reader elsewhere for further discussion. Unlike most books on Locke by philosophers, this one also includes his political theory and shows its relation to Locke's other views by tying together threads of his thought from one topic to the next. I thoroughly enjoyed working through it in a graduate seminar taught by the author, but I can see that it would be quite valuable just as a resource or as an accompaniment to someone's trying to approach Locke's thought in detail but without much background.

I neglected to mention one thing about this book. Jolley sees himself not just as a student of what Locke said but as if he is in philosophical interaction with Locke and his critics. He presents many common criticisms of Locke and responds to them. He also leaves Locke stranded in places where he really seems to have gotten himself into trouble. This book does a great job not just approaching the issues but also in trying to clarify them in the terms of contemporary philosophers and in defending Locke against the all-too-quick criticisms he often receives.

Lentin Joseph

Lentin Joseph is an author, entrepreneur, electronics engineer, robotics enthusiast, machine vision expert, embedded programmer, and the founder and CEO of Qbotics Labs (http://www.qboticslabs.com) from India. He completed his bachelor's degree in electronics and communication engineering at the Federal Institute of Science and Technology (FISAT), Kerala. For his final year engineering project, he made a social robot that can interact with people. The project was a huge success and was mentioned in many forms of visual and print media. The main features of this robot were that it can communicate with people and reply intelligently and has some image processing capabilities such as face, motion, and color detection. The entire project was implemented using the Python programming language. His interest in robotics, image processing, and Python started with that project. After his graduation, for 3 years he worked in a start-up company focusing on robotics and image processing. In the meantime, he learned famous robotic software platforms such as Robot Operating System (ROS), V-REP, Actin (a robotic simulation tool), and image processing libraries such as OpenCV, OpenNI, and PCL. He also knows robot 3D designing and embedded programming on Arduino and Tiva Launchpad. After 3 years of work experience, he started a new company called Qbotics Labs, which mainly focuses on research to build up some great products in domains such as robotics and machine vision. He maintains a personal website (http://www.lentinjoseph.com) and a technology blog called technolabsz (http://www.technolabsz.com). He publishes his works on his tech blog. He was also a speaker at PyCon2013, India, on the topic Learning Robotics using Python. Clive "Max" Maxfield received a BS in Control Engineering from Sheffield Polytechnic, England in 1980. He began his career as a mainframe CPU designer for International Computers Limited (ICL) in Manchester, England. A good introduction, needs some editor work.

I really like this book and while it may have been written in 2005 it will give you a crash course in the field of FPGA's, I used this as a stop on my way to actually programming and understanding FPGA's.

Follow this book up with actually purchasing a FPGA and a book (such as Verilog by example) to move forward.

I knocked one star off because while I felt the book was extremely informative there were some seriously glaring edit issues with the book.
One other problem I found was that the author, being so entrenched in the field tends to mention something a while prior to describing it. If you're confused on a topic while reading, continue along, he'll eventually explain.

Recommended Reading for FPGA Design

Another Excellent book by Mr. Maxfield. I had received a copy of his book "The Design Warrior's Guide to FPGAs" at a design seminar, and enjoyed it so much I purchased this one from Amazon.com. This book was a joy to read, as Mr. Maxfield has a very clear, conversational writing style that makes his work very readable.

I highly recommend this book for anyone starting out in FPGA design, and wish I had read it before going through the pain of having to select an FPGA for use in our hardware. A long, tedious task, which would have been much simpler with access to Mr. Maxfield's insights on the various vendors and their product offerings.

After reading the book, I realize that my FPGA vendor selection could have been better. We use PowerPC micro-controllers from AMCC in our products, and should we ever move to an FPGA with an embedded PowerPC core, we'll likely have to shift from our current FPGA vendor to Xilinx, in order to meet our FPGA needs.

Since I didn't select Xilinx initially, this will entail tooling up on a different family of FPGA devices and development tools. Not a trivial task. Had I read "FPGAs: Instant Access" before making my selection, it would have allowed me to make a more informed vendor selection for our long term applications.

ASIC versus FPGA

Already knew much about FPGAs before getting this book. What makes "FPGAs Instant Access" valuable to me is Maxfield's background in both FPGAs and ASICs. ASIC practices and flows are rarely discussed in FPGA texts.

If you are doing an ASIC to FPGA conversion, this is a good book to read.
