Refreshing and still a classic

From my own experience, I've always been frustrated with the tendency of the architecture community to either completely overlook the aesthetic works of the great structural engineers or shamelessly claim them as their own. This book is beyond a simple consensus of great engineering works; it is Billington's clear and rational case for the distinction of the discipline of Structural Art - the engineer's means of expression - from that of Architecture.

This book is just the thing any student or young professional in structural engineering should have along with their library of technical books. Instead of explaining the aesthetics and beauty of structures in vague architectural terms, Billington looks at them in terms of the technical (formwork, stress diagrams, material economy, etc.). When has an architectural critic discussed the elegance behind a moment diagram?

I think anyone who loves architecture and great works of engineering will appreciate this book. If you like this, I would also recommend Billington's 'Robert Maillart and the Art of Reinforced Concrete' and Salvadori's 'Why Buildings Stand Up'.

Detailed exploration of Structural Art

Billington goes through the evolution of structural art/expressionism in great detail. It is helpful to have a preexisting knowledge about the various engineers/artist discussed in this text, however, it is not necessary. This book is very interesting and encourages the engineer to consider the aesthetic consequences of structures.
It is an inspiring book to read (and re-read) and is packed full of historical bridges and other structures (like thin concrete shells). I highly recommend it to engineering students with an interest in structures.

Fun, yet alarmingly inappropriate wildlife storyline and a blatant attempt at indoctrination.

This ebook was enjoyed by my Kindergartener. There are cute little illustrations accompanied by most of the pages that relates to what is going on in the story. Mostly, this ebook aims to encourage children to do good deeds. At the end there is a single line that advocates Scouting itself. The verbiage for the book is easy enough for peers of my child's age, with a few more sophisticated words. The ebook was read to me by my child with only a few understandable questions on how to pronounce words or their definition. I can see a 1st or 2nd grader reading this without any issue at all. As for the way the ebook is written itself, it feels like it was not proofed beforehand. I almost feel like this was written by someone who does not speak English as their first language or rather, it was translated into English using a free translator app.

I really did not like the part of the story where the scouts discovered a baby bird on the ground. The baby bird and nest were then moved to another location by the scouts. In the story, the mother bird "understands" the children will not harm the bird and is happy about the move. Whether the age old tale of mother birds deserting their young is true or not, I would never encourage my young child to do such a thing! I was horrified this ebook implied this was a wise thing for the scouts to do. My child was equally upset about this part, as I have taught her to never touch a nest or baby bird and she knows better than to think a mother bird would be thankful to her for doing such.

While the ebook was not amazing, it was not terrible. My child liked reading it and felt very accomplished having done so. I personally feel like the premise of the ebook is simply to instill morals and good behavior, but the overtone of scouts advertising is significant.

I received this book without compensation, but with a discount using my iPhone to read the ebook. I had no problem at all getting it to load using the kindle app. It displayed instantly after purchasing and loaded perfectly in landscape mode. Good story idea but needs editing

The story idea is cute. The illustrations are OK. I found the phrasing rather strange and the punctuation lacking. I was distracted from the story because of the unusual way of stating certain situations. This book needs a good editor.

Cute Inspirational Book for Kids

This book was such a cute little inspirational read for my six year old. He is a Cub Scout so he enjoyed reading about these adventures of the Scouts. All the helpful things they did along their journey. It helps kids learn about helping and doing things for others. I really enjoyed reading this book to my son and recommend it as a little read. It was perfect for him. It was not too short and not too long. It was split up with different little sections of the helpful adventures the Scouts had along their way. Splitting it up into chapters helps young children when reading or even being read to. Will definately be finding more short reads like this one for us to read together. A glamorous career, well told

I've only heard Frances Alda on poor recordings. But she certainly had a fun and glamorous life and wrote very well about it. The name dropping is relatively discreet, but it's also fun to read some of the animosity toward Geraldine Farrar (in her own autobiography, Farrar refers to Alda as a prima donna of secondary importance without naming her), and the ups and downs of her marriage to the manager of the Met. Artistic and entertaining at the same time, probably much like her performances. It's also a link to an old performing tradition, since her teacher also taught Nellie Melba and studied with the great vocal instructors of the 19th century, and some of that comes through in the description of her vocal exercises and lessons. In the end, there's a tiny bit of self-indulgence, but a model of information and good writing compared to biographies (hagiographies) of more recent singers.

Lively and readable account of a busy life ...

Madame Alda was born in New Zealand but raised in Melbourne, the birthplace of her fellow student of Madame Mathilde Marchesi, Madame (later Dame) Nellie Melba. It seems that there were indeed many Madames associated with the world of song. Her family members included many singers - Frances Saville, Alda's aunt, was a well known soprano who enjoyed a successful international career.

Taken with a few pinches of salt, this story of a singer's life may represent a reasonably accurate account - and certainly an interesting one - of the struggles for success, in training, and on and off stage.

Marvelous, humorous, and vibrant

My singing teacher, a 92 tenor, asked me to order Men Women and Tenors by Frances Alda for him since he had lost his copy years ago. I received it Friday and glanced at it and could not put it down till I finished it Sunday at noon.

It is a well written memoir, a fascinating glimpse into the life of a great Prima Donna of Opera, the recollections of a passionate artist who valued the humanity that art and artists strive for.

I appreciated learning from her what a great artist Caruso was, great in the sense of his being a team player to all.

The funny anecdotes make it a pleasurable read, a very hospitable one.

Bravissima!

The book is an attempt to show that the true authors of Greek philosophy were not the Greeks, but the people of North Africa, commonly called the Egyptians; and the praise and honor falsely given to the Greeks for centuries belong to the people of North Africa, and therefore to the African Continent. Consequently, this theft of the African legacy by the Greeks led to the erroneous world opinion that the African Continent has made no contribution to civilization, and that its people are naturally backward. This is the misrepresentation that has become the basis of race prejudice, which has affected all people of color.

About the Author
Dr. George G. M. James was a Guyanese author and historian. He received his PhD from Columbia University in New York and went on to be a professor of mathematics, logic, Greek, and Latin.

I am in the process of returning the book because it is not the real book as advertised. This is not a comment on the Book titled "Stolen Legacy" by George G.M. James who is a wonderful author and writer. This is to alert the public that this book with this cover is a copyright infringement book. The original book published by Philosophical Library in 1954 - First Print - contained 190 Pages. This copy only has 166 Pages. There is no mention of the publisher or copyright inside the first page of the book.

A very interesting read, although the references can get lengthy, the message is clear. I admired Greek philosophy since I discovered it College, but they never taught us the origins of their teachings. This book encourages you to relearn what you have learned and dig deeper into Kemet to find the answers that were plagiarized by European culture. Goes to show you, nothing is new under the sun.

This is a closely reasoned , scientific review of the evidence adduced from ancient sources of the contributions of the negroid population of ancient Egypt to Greek/ Hellenistic notions of Philosophy and science. In deed the balance of evidence points to the Egyptians as the actual originators of these ideas. The review corroborates the findings and conclusions of Cheik Anta Diop's " an Authentic anthropology". This book will appeal to the analytical amateur as well as the professional historian not exposed to this kind of analytical approach . Excellent work.

Given the variety of reviews of this book and the fact that I work at the forefront of much of the technology change described, I wasn't sure the book would provide much value. However, bringing together important technology changes that appear to be imminent in the next decade in one place and assessing their potential positive and negative impacts is great food for thought. This book is probably intended for political decision makers in order to provide a heads-up for what lies ahead (these are really tough issues that will require thoughtful leadership). That said, anyone who wonders whether their job could be at risk or whether their children are pursuing the right occupation should read this. The world will be a very different place in 10 years. Countries and economies will embrace the change and lead it, or they will fall behind countries that do. There will be many individuals that won't be happy with the changes, but those that prepare and are adaptable will likely find the world to be a better place.

We Can Harness The Affects Of The Fourth Industrial Revolution

This book by Professor Klaus Schwab is not for the faint hearted! Our digitised future stretches before us heralding an age where technology would appear to 'boldy go where no man has been before' Robotics, nanotechnology, biotechnology, 3-D printing and the Internet of things will shape an unfamiliar world in which humankind will need to stamp it's authority for fear of being marginalised. Moore's Law would appear to be on steroids as we rush towards roboticised personal assistants, designer children and businesses with no capital assets in the conventional sense (check Air B and B and Uber)
Knowledge and it's acquisition will present unique ethical dilemmas and increased inequality as those with knowledge will become the elite in society. However, there is a ray of hope!! The very things that make us human and are integral to the concept and reality of human dignity will continue to set us apart from our technologically driven future. Compassion, empathy, mercy and forgiveness are not programmable. Teaching, writing, surgery, accounting, et al might all be the future domain of techology, but the arms of a mother as she comforts her child, or the forgiveness offered a thief who stole food to feed their family, or the mercy extended to migrants as they flee war torn countries cannot be replaced with technology. Our future is most definitely headed on this knowledge driven digitised course as outlined by Schwab, but he reminds us that we must celebrate and develop our unique talents/properties as humans if we are to take control of our future. Please read this book it can only enlighten you.

The information is all there but hard to read if you're not familiar with the technology. It reads like a summary of a bunch of government reports. The information is well thought out but it needs to be studied and thought through especially for implications and future consequences.

Great Book

First saw this at a museum gift shop and passed it over because I did not want to carry it around.... The thought of the book stayed with me for about a month, I remembered the impression created by the book- the pictures were taken in many different places, by many different people- by the way the material was assembled and presented is amazing.

Another Dip Into The Pool

Author Evan Bachner returns two years later with a follow-up to his first book, "At Ease". If you thoroughly enjoyed his first book, as I did, you wont be disappointed. Filled with over 150 photos of sailors and soldiers looking quite peaceful,even though a war raged around them. Being a Navy veteran, I couldn't help but notice how familiar some of these images seem. A perfect companion to the first book.

My partner and I had just watched BAND OF BROTHERS & THE PACIFIC series by HBO ,so we were wondering about the gay feeling aroundethe times of the WWII, so we purchased this book . I was amazed with the pictures that show this brotherhood between them , it almost make you feel uncomfortable not because they are sexual , but because they are so innocent and sweet at times . It's almost sad since you do not know how many of this soldiers made it . You have just this fragment of time put on paper (picture) wich represents that specific moment in time were they were at ease and that the last thing they were thinking is who was going to be killed next or if you were going to see the face of your next victim.
