Tedious and slow to get going
By Adam O. Roslund
This book contains very little continuum mechanics in it. It starts out with a tedious development of suffix notation, as well as two chapters developing the properties of cartesian tensors of second order. Unfortunately, this includes proving such basic things as the sum of two tensors being a tensor. The author seems to also enjoy avoiding conventional notation wherever possible, and places everything (products of matrices, products of matrices and vectors, cross products) in suffix notation, which blurs clarity quite often for those new to the convention. Furthermore, the fundamental laws of continuum mechanics are delayed until page 325 (the third from last chapter), leaving only two chapters (a measly two-thirds of the book) for elasticity and fluid mechanics. Finally, the style is a fairly strict theorem-proof, which makes it quite a dry read.

Nice math book but not enough physics
By MDC
This book is a nice tensor analysis book, however, basically nothing about constitutive theory (one of the most important results in continuum physics) is presented. There are other continuum mechanics books out there in this price range that are better (e.g. Spencer, Gurtin...etc.)

Continuum mechanics
By Christos Tsoumeleas
This is a very good introductory book on continuum mechanics. I believe that the use of the suffix notation that the authors adopt throughout the book makes it easier for the reader to put in practical use the theoretical principles developed in chapters 5,6,7 and 8.

On the planet Tython, the ancient Je’daii order was founded. And at the feet of its wise Masters, Lanoree Brock learned the mysteries and methods of the Force—and found her calling as one of its most powerful disciples. But as strongly as the Force flowed within Lanoree and her parents, it remained absent in her brother, who grew to despise and shun the Je’daii, and whose training in its ancient ways ended in tragedy.

Now, from her solitary life as a Ranger keeping order across the galaxy, Lanoree has been summoned by the Je’daii Council on a matter of utmost urgency. The leader of a fanatical cult, obsessed with traveling beyond the reaches of known space, is bent on opening a cosmic gateway using dreaded dark matter as the key—risking a cataclysmic reaction that will consume the entire star system. But more shocking to Lanoree than even the prospect of total galactic annihilation, is the decision of her Je’daii Masters to task her with the mission of preventing it. Until a staggering revelation makes clear why she was chosen: The brilliant, dangerous madman she must track down and stop at any cost is the brother whose death she has long grieved—and whose life she must now fear.

Includes a special, full-color excerpt from the Dark Horse comic Star Wars: Dawn of the Jedi and an original Dawn of the Jedi short story by John Ostrander!

Praise for Into the Void

“In a story filled with adventure, intrigue, and great quotes, there’s a lot to like in this book. Tim Lebbon dives into his very first Star Wars story with a great deal of success. He manages to spin a tale that feels like Star Wars, but also feels different from other stories that have been told before. While there is some threat of system wide destruction, the point is never pushed to being ridiculous. The characters feel believable and provoke interest. The attention to the characters never takes away from the plot. There’s also a remarkable balance between world building, plot and character development, and action. When it comes down to it, Dawn of the Jedi: Into the Void is just great storytelling.”—Roqoo Depot

“A nice, compact Star Wars tale that both acts as an introduction to the Dawn of the Jedi period and a standalone story.”—Club Jade

“A solidly enjoyable read . . . a nice addition to the Expanded Universe.”—Tosche Station

“A good solid Star Wars adventure story with heart.”—Knights’ Archive

Chapter One

dark matters

Even at the beginning of our journey I feel like a rock in the river of the Force. Lanoree is a fish carried by that river, feeding from it, living within it, relying on the waters for her well-being. But I am unmoving. An inconvenience to the water as long as I remain. And slowly, slowly, I am being eroded to nothing.

—Dalien Brock, diaries, 10,661 TYA

She is a little girl, the sky seems wide and endless, and Lanoree Brock breathes in the wonders of Tython as she runs to find her brother.

Dalien is down by the estuary again. He likes being alone, away from all the other children at Bodhi, the Je’daii Temple of the Arts. Her parents have sent her to find him, and though they still have some teaching to do that afternoon, they’ve promised that they will walk up to the boundary of the Edge Forest that evening. Lanoree loves it up there. And it scares her a little, as well. Close to the temple, near the sea, she can feel the Force ebbing and flowing through everything—the air she breathes, the sights she sees, and all that makes up the beautiful scenery. Up at the Edge Forest, there’s a primal wildness to the Force that sets her blood pumping.

Her mother will smile and say that she will learn about it all, given time. Her father will look silently into the forest, as if he silently yearns to explore that way. And her little brother, only nine years old, will start to cry.

Always at the Edge Forest, he cries.

“Dal!” She swishes through the long grasses close to the riverbank, hands held out by her sides so that the grass caresses her palms. She won’t tell him about the walk planned for that evening. If she does he’ll get moody, and he might not agree to come home with her. He can be like that sometimes, and their father says it’s the sign of someone finding his own way.

Dal doesn’t seem to have heard her, and as she closes on him she slows from a run to a walk and thinks, If that was me I’d have sensed me approaching ages ago.

Dal’s head remains dipped. By his side he has created a perfect circle using the stones of chewed mepples, his favorite fruit. He does that when he’s thinking.

The river flows by, fast and full from the recent rains. There’s a power to it that is intimidating, and, closing her eyes, Lanoree feels the Force and senses the myriad life-forms that call the river home. Some are as small as her finger, others that swim upriver from the ocean almost half the size of a Cloud Chaser ship. She knows from her studies that many of them have teeth.

She bites her lip, hesitant. Then she probes out with her mind and—

“I told you to never do that to me!”

“Dal . . .”

He stands and turns around, and he looks furious. Just for a moment there’s a fire in his eyes that she doesn’t like. She has seen those flames before, and carries the knotted scar tissue in her lower lip to prove it. Then his anger slips and he smiles.

“Sorry. You startled me, that’s all.”

“You’re drawing?” she asks, seeing the sketchbook.

Dal closes the book. “It’s rubbish.”

“I don’t believe that,” Lanoree says. “You’re really good. Temple Master Fenn himself says so.”

“Temple Master Fenn is a friend of Father’s.”

Lanoree ignores the insinuation and walks closer to her brother. She can already see that he has chosen a fine place from which to draw the surroundings. The river curves here, and a smaller tributary joins from the hills of the Edge Forest, causing a confusion of currents. The undergrowth on the far bank is colorful and vibrant, and there’s a huge old ak tree whose hollowed trunk is home to a flight of weave birds. Their spun golden threads glisten in the afternoon sun. The birdsong complements the river’s roar.

“Let me see,” Lanoree says.

Dal does not look at her, but he opens the pad.

“It’s beautiful,” she says. “The Force has guided your fingers, Dal.” But she’s not sure.

Dal picks a heavy pencil from his pocket and strikes five thick lines through his drawing, left to right, tearing the paper and ruining it forever. His expression does not change, and neither does his breathing. It’s almost as if there is no anger at all.

“There,” he says. “That’s better.”

For a moment the lines look like claw marks, and as Lanoree takes a breath and blinks—

A soft, insistent alarm pulled her up from sleep. Lanoree sighed and sat up, rubbing her eyes, massaging the dream away. Dear Dal. She dreamed of him often, but they were usually dreams of those later times when everything was turning bad. Not when they were still children for whom Tython was so full of potential.

Perhaps it was because she was on her way home.

She had not been back to Tython for more than four years. She was a Je’daii Ranger, and so ranging is what she did. Some Rangers found reasons to return to Tython regularly. Family connections, continuous training, face-to-face debriefs, it all amounted to the same thing—they hated being away from home. She also believed that there were those Je’daii who felt the need to immerse themselves in Tython’s Force-rich surroundings from time to time, as if uncertain that their affinity with the Force was strong enough.

Lanoree had no such doubts. She was comfortable with her strength and balance in the Force. The short periods she had spent with others on retreats on Ashla and Bogan—a voluntary part of a Padawan’s training, should they desire to go—had made her even more confident in this.

She stood from her cot and stretched. She reached for the ceiling and grabbed the bars she’d welded there herself, pulling up, breathing softly, then lifting her legs and stretching them out until she was horizontal to the floor. Her muscles quivered, and she breathed deeply as she felt the Force flowing through her, a vibrant, living thing. Mental exercise and meditation were fine, but sometimes she took the greatest pleasure in exerting herself physically. She believed that to be strong with the Force, one had to be strong in body.

The alarm was still ringing.

“I’m awake,” she said, easing herself slowly back to the floor, “in case you hadn’t noticed.”

The alarm snapped off, and her Peacemaker ship’s grubby yellow maintenance droid ambled into the small living quarters on padded metal feet. It was one of many adaptations she’d made to the ship in her years out in the Tythan system. Most Peacemakers carried a very simple droid, but she’d updated hers to a Holgorian IM-220, capable of limited communication with a human master and other duties not necessarily exclusive to ship maintenance. She’d further customized it with some heavy armor, doubling its weight but making it much more useful to her in risky scenarios. She spoke to it, its replies were obtuse, and she supposed it was the equivalent of trying to communicate with a grass kapir back home. She had even named it.

“Hey, Ironholgs. You better not have woken me early.”

The droid beeped and scraped, and she wasn’t sure whether it was getting cranky in its old age.

She looked around the small but comfortable living quarters. She had chosen a Peacemaker over a Hunter because of its size; even before she’d flown her first mission as a Je’daii Ranger, she knew that she would be eager to spend much of her time in space. A Hunter was fast and agile but too small to live in. The Peacemaker was a compromise on maneuverability, but she had spent long periods living alone on the ship. She preferred it that way.

And like most Rangers, she had made many modifications and adaptations to her ship that stamped her own identity upon it. She’d stripped out the table and chairs and replaced them with a weights and tensions rack for working out. Now, she ate her food sitting on her narrow cot. She’d replaced the holonet entertainment system with an older flatscreen, which doubled as communications center and reduced the ship’s net weight. Beside the extensive engine compartment there had been a small room that housed a second cot for guests or companions, but because she had neither she had filled the space with extra laser charge pods, a water recycling unit, and food stores. The ship’s four laser cannon turrets had also been upgraded, and it now also carried plasma missiles, and drone missiles for long-distance combat. At the hands of the Cathar master armorer Gan Corla, the cannons now packed three times more punch and were effective over twice the range as those standard to Peacemakers.

She had also altered and adapted the function and position of many cockpit controls, making it so that only she could effectively fly the ship. It was hers, it was home, and that was how she liked it.

“How long to Tython?” she asked.

The droid let out a series of whines and clicks.

“Right,” Lanoree said. “Suppose I’d better freshen up.” She brushed a touch pad and the darkened screens in the forward cockpit faded to clear, revealing the star-speckled view that never failed to make her heart ache. There was something so profoundly moving to the distance and scale of what she saw out there, and the Force never let her forget that she was a part of something incomprehensibly large. She supposed it was as close as she ever came to a religious epiphany.

She touched the pad again and a red glow appeared, surrounding a speck in the distance. Tython. Three hours and she’d be there.

The Je’daii Council ordering her back to Tython meant only one thing. They had a mission for her, and it was one that they needed to discuss face-to-face.

***

Washed, dressed, and fed, Lanoree sat in the ship’s cockpit and watched Tython drawing closer. Her ship had communicated with sentry drones orbiting at thirty thousand kilometers, and now the Peacemaker was performing a graceful parabola that would take it down into the atmosphere just above the equator.

She was nervous about visiting Tython again, but part of her was excited as well. It would be good to see her mother and father, however briefly. She contacted them far too infrequently. With Dal dead, she was now their only child.

A soft chime announced an incoming transmission. She swiveled her seat and faced the flatscreen, just as it snowed into an image.

“Master Dam-Powl,” Lanoree said, surprised. “An honor.” And it was. She had expected the welcoming transmission to be from a Je’daii Ranger or perhaps even a Journeyer she did not know. Not the Cathar Je’daii Master.

Dam-Powl bowed her head. “Lanoree, it’s good to see you again. We’ve been eagerly awaiting your arrival. Pressing matters beg discussion. Dark matters.”

“I assumed that was the case,” Lanoree said. She shifted in her seat, unaccountably nervous.

“I sense your discomfort,” Master Dam-Powl said.

“Forgive me. It’s been some time since I spoke with a Je’daii Master.”

“You feel unsettled even with me?” Dam-Powl asked, smiling. But the smile quickly slipped. “No matter. Prepare yourself, because today you speak with six Masters, including Stav Kesh’s Temple Master Lha-Mi. I’ve sent your ship the landing coordinates for our meeting place thirty kilometers south of Akar Kesh. We’ll expect you soon.”

“Master, we’re not meeting at a temple?”

But Dam-Powl had already broken the transmission, and Lanoree was left staring at a blank screen. She could see her image reflected there, and she quickly gathered herself, breathing away the shock. Six Je’daii Masters? And Lha-Mi as well?

“Then it is something big.”

She checked the transmitted coordinates and switched the flight computer to manual, eager to make the final approach herself. She had always loved flying and the freedom it gave her. Untethered. Almost a free agent.

Lanoree closed her eyes briefly and breathed with the Force. It was strong this close to Tython, elemental, and it sparked her senses alive.

Good premise but needed more
By Ben I.
I am an avid Star Wars EU fan. I have read nearly every star wars novel to date. I was really excited for Dawn of the Jedi: Into the Void.
The novel contains some excellent action sequences and also delves into some of the "dark" arts of the force, if you will. Overall, the premise and plot were very good. However, the pacing of the book was too fast and fractured. The author, Tim Lebbon, constantly shifts from present to past and back again. It confuses the reader whether he/she is in the present or not because it is not always clear where one is in the story.

The main character, Lanoree, is a little one-sided. Lebbon does not manifest a strong feeling of attachment for his main character or any of them for that matter. The emotion in the book does not suck you in the way other SW novels do by, say, Troy Denning or Matthew Stover.

The book is short, only 250 pages or so. There is a short story at the end of the book. However, from what I read, the short is a prequel to the novel. If you get the book, read the short first. Okay, the bad is over, onto the good.

As I said earlier, the premise is good. There are no lightsabers here. The jedi use what I can most accurately view as Kitanas. The idea that the jedi were once like samurai is an impressive one, in my opinion. The light side and dark side of the force do not necessarily have any bearing on the story. The danger lies in how far Jeda'ii delve into the dark side, not performing dark acts. The jeda'ii also demonstrate, in the novel, a willingness to push the boundaries of the force to learn more about it, which I consider interesting.

Within the canon of the EU, I would advise people to read this novel. However, I do not think it is going to be worth reading multiple times.

Good Ideas, Weak Story
By Jason Talley
I really enjoy the Dawn of the Jedi comics by John Ostrander so I went into this book with high hopes. Sadly, while there are some good moments and some interesting ideas are played withand , the story as a whole is rather weak.

Let's talk about the good first. Dawn of the Jedi is an interesting era as it's a time when the Jedi don't see the dark side as the big problem but out of balance between the two as the biggest threat to a Jedi. Seeing Jedi willing to play around with things like alchemy and do things that even they admit dances very close to the line is fascinating stuff. Lebbon clearly did his homework and if you've read the comics then a lot of places mentioned will be familiar. I even spotted a reference or two to stuff I know from the Old Republic MMO. Also, towards the end there are a few really shocking and interesting events.

Now let's talk the bad. Frankly,Lanoree, our main character isn't that interesting and neither is her brother who's also a big part of what's going on. A huge chunk of the story is spent in flashback. While important to what's going on, after a while I got sick of the flashbacks and just wanted to get back to what's happening in the present. Seriously, this book is a textbook example of how NOT to use flashbacks. Also, way too much time is spent just running around rather than doing things actually drive the story on. The story itself clocks in at around 280 pages which is bit on the short side for a novel. If you dropped all the unneeded dashing about I think this would have been a novella rather than a novel.

In the end, I can't recommend this book. Lebbon plays around well with the philosophical ideas John Ostrander put out, but the story itself is rather lackluster. If you're interested in this era of Star Wars you'll be much better served by reading the comics.

a fun story - but not so epic
By Arnold
I read this story having read all of the Dawn of the Jedi comics published as of early May. That was both a good and bad thing. Here are my impressions:

PLOT

The plot basically requires Lanoree, a Je'daii (older version of the Jedi), to stop her brother Dale from using an ancient piece of technology to try to open a hypergate. Much of the story actually centers around Lanoree's relationship with her brother. It's a fun story, but doesn't feel particularly epic, especially when compared to the Dawn of the Jedi comics. One rarely gets the sense that we're witnessing events that will change the galaxy. It's more a tale about a brother and sister, which I think generally works well.

A note to new readers: while you'll probably follow the basic outline of the story, this book does reference many events, characters, and events described in the Dawn of the Jedi comics. This book unfortunately doesn't provide much in the way of background. You'll probably enjoy the story more if you've read the comics, or at least the "Issue 0", which provides background for the Dawn of the Jedi era in general.

CHARACTERS

Lanoree is the main Je'daii and she's fine, but nothing remarkable. She comes across as rather vanilla as far as characters go. For a story about her attempts to track down and kill her brother, there's surprising little emotion in the story. There are some moments, particularly near the end, where we see Lanoree struggle with some inner turmoil, but I felt little connection to the character. She certainly isn't as interesting as the female Je'daii in the Dawn of the Jedi comics.

Tre Sana, a Twilek rogue who helps Lanoree, had some potential to make Lanoree's character more interesting. I liked seeing the friendship between them develop. Unfortunately, I think Lebbon really dropped the ball in not making that a bigger part of the story.

WRITING

I felt that this book spent a lot of time narrating Lanoree's thoughts or showing flashbacks to her time as a young Je'daii. Because of this, I felt the book was showing, not telling, too often. Still, while the writing isn't particularly gripping, it does it's job and certainly isn't a chore to get through.

AUDIOBOOK

I'm not crazy about January LaVoy's narration for the book. She doesn't create enough difference in the voices of the characters. All of her male characters sound the same. It's not horrible, and certainly not soporific, but I miss Marc Thompson and Jonathan Davies.

OVERALL

Overall, this is a fun book. It's not stellar, and not even at the level of the awesome Dawn of the Jedi comics. Yet, the story flows smoothly and contains a fair amount of character development. Overall 3.75 stars.

Good Resource for Improving Collaboration & Connection in the Workplace
By E. Johnson
Social media is not a passing fancy, it's here to stay. So how can we best work with it - not in spite of it? Tony Bingham and Marcia Conner share their ideas in The New Social Learning, a handbook for how organizations and teams can utilize this tool to improve capacity for learning and growing together. They believe we can learn how to leverage the communities our people are already part of, the social media tools they use on their own personal time, and use them to connect and collaborate with each other and our surrounding communities.

Some highlights: Chapter 3 speaks especially to the importance of community and showing up online. Chapter 4 provides practical ideas for growing your organization's social presence "one bite at a time." Chapter 5 presents some patterns, metrics, and goals to consider in analyzing the effectiveness of your impact and influence online. Chapter 6 was especially helpful for me, as I don't work in the traditional corporate setting. It connects the ideas presented throughout the book to roles outside the workplace - such as attending conferences, speaking at events, or even getting to know someone over a good meal.

This book reminds us to be humble enough to admit we need collaboration from others in almost every endeavor, and not be afraid to be seen asking the community for help, opinions, or ideas. It is a rich repository of ideas, relatable examples, actionable ideas, and engaging quotes. It also includes a thorough list of further reading and helpful glossary of social media terms.

My only disappointment is that, despite a brief consideration in Chapter 6, the majority of the book ignored any type of organization outside the traditional corporate world. I believe the principles and ideas are very useful for non-profits, ministries, etc - but at times it was challenging to dig through the workplace focus and apply those ideas to other settings.

Disclaimer: I received this book for free in exchange for an honest review. All opinions expressed herein are completely my own.

Great book to jump into social learning and putting social media to great use for yourself and your teams!
By Lisa Kosak
I’m a learning geek and have taken full advantage of social media to learn something new every day. I was excited to read the book The New Social Learning 2nd Edition by Tony Bingham and Marcia Connor. Social media allows people from all over to share and learn from each other. This book champions the benefits of social learning and how it can be used to further learning, organizations, and teams. What better way to engage with others than to put something “out there” and receive hundreds of ideas and thoughts back? That’s social learning.

Bingham and Conner use real life case examples of how business and industry have used social media to grow, empower, and work with the ever changing workforce. They eloquently aim to prove that social media can really transform companies, talent, and even company culture. They explain what a powerful learning tool social media can be when managed and used to encourage more personal connections. Companies need to embrace new social technologies that focus on the talents of everyone, yet bring people together to share strengths.

There is so much negative criticism of social media and The New Social Learning 2nd Edition meets that challenge head to head. The authors effectively shoot down some of the excuses that organizations quote to not use and encourage social media. They reaffirm that social learning does not happen overnight and that social media is a building block on top of other platforms. Various learning methods all need to intertwine. Social learning doesn’t replace formal education or training. It augments it and brings people together. Social learning brings us the wisdom, knowledge, and new tools to our doorstep from around the world.

I eagerly learned how strong company cultures encourage social learning and how impossible it is to prevent people from using social media. You can’t ignore what is in front of people every day so jump into social media and learning so that it benefits everyone and is used for personal and business betterment. This type of learning allows strong people to do their best work. It personalizes the way that people and leaders interact. It brings skills and connectivity to the next level. Social Learning is the new revolution of learning together to grow together.

Whether you manage a company or teams this is a helpful book to pick up to get you thinking. You may look at social media in a fresh way. You may find that your fears of social media are just that – your fears. You will really see for the first time how social learning can really impact a culture and even change a business model. Social learning may increase profits and market growth. Most importantly, social learning is about people, relationships, growth, and connecting. By the way, social media is free and your learning can be too!

The one area that The New Social Learning won’t guide you is how to actually implement social media and social learning into your company or teams. The book skims over the implementation of social learning and does not offer a step by step plan. This is an area where you will need to seek out the assistance of others or find another learning resource.

It's Worth THAT Much
By R. McConaughy
Social Learning is worth every bit of what you invest in it. If the first edition got you started in social learning in your business or organization, this edition will give you a chance to assess where you are. If you don't think your business or organization is using social learning, you're wrong, and the book will help you to recognize it and to put the research base about social learning to work. If, like me, you read the first edition then, like me, you probably forgot some of what you learned and can use a refresher. The new edition is more than a refresher, it includes new material – because a few new things have been learned – and new examples – because a few new things have happened. I learned and re-learned a lot.

Chapter Six: In-person Learning Reimagined was my favorite because I Chair an annual conference and this chapter was a wealth of ideas and information about setting up a conference for effective social learning. Getting people away from the groups they work and live with every day and providing enough time for reflection will be more prominent at my conference next year. I'll implement the backchannel more effectively. We won't be Burning Man but we will incorporate some of what has been learned there. I haven't had this valuable a resource for thinking about making my conference more effective for years.

I give a lot of books away after I read them. I might give this one away too but, I'll definitely replace it with one I can keep for a reference. It's worth that much.

An outstanding addition to the field of restaurant management
By Brother Herman
Ninemeier and Hayes' book does an excellent job of providing the detailed information managers need to profitably operate a restaurant, but does it in a very simple, highly readable manner. I believe students will find the book to be most enjoyable. As an Instructor, I really like the ease in which my students will learn and retain the information. I think it is absolutely the best text on the subject and its recent copyright means it is also the most up-to-date.

The encyclopedia of restaurants management
By Raed Halaseh
If you know nothing, I mean nothing, about restaurants operations and management this book is for you.

Hi, my name is Raed Halaseh and I have been a professional Civil Engineer for the last 20 years. Six month ago I have decided to get into the hospitality business, namely the Franchise restaurants.

Purchasing Jack Ninemeier and David Hayes, Restaurant Operations and Management, Principles and Practices was the best thing that I have done to launching my Restaurant career.

I was amazed to how much knowledge I have acquired from reading this book. This became clear when I attended the mandatory managers training course, as part of becoming a Franchisee, as all topics introduced at the training course were covered in Ninemeier and Hayes Restaurant, Operations Management book.

If all goes well, I will have my first Restaurant Grand Opening on March 1st, 2008. It is true I will not have the hand-on experience, but armed with the information I have acquired from Ninemeier and Hayes Restaurant, Operations Management book will make operating and managing my first restaurant an exciting experience.

At the end, I would like to thank the authors for putting together such a wonderful, interesting, exciting and well arranged book that will be my best companion through the years as I operate and manage my restaurants.

Best regards,
Yours in Restaurant business to be,
Raed Halaseh
