Wendell Odom, CCIE No. 1624 (Emeritus), has been in the networking industry since 1981. He has worked as a network engineer, consultant, systems engineer, instructor, and course developer; he currently works writing and creating certification study tools. Everything you need for the ICND2 is in this book, as well as some stuff you won't

Extremely thorough manual with everything you need to know to pass the CCNA/ICND2 exam. I originally purchased the ipad version and highly recommend avoiding the electronic copy and opting for this hardcover book instead. It makes studying much easier as you can view more material, make necessary notes and highlight. You will also get a handy disk included with plenty of tools and resources to maximize the effectiveness of your study time. I recently passed the ICND1 exam and used the same Cisco Official Cert Guide (ICND1) as one of my primary study sources. I highly recommend this to get the knowledge you need to pass. I only rated 4 stars because of the complete overkill of information in the book. Some of the concepts in the book will not be covered in the exam. I'd rather see a book centered focused only on the concepts in the exam.

Hace mucho que un libro no me enganchaba como este ¡ ESPECTACULAR!!!

Lo bueno de tener un kindle, es que nunca te quedas sin material de lectura a mano... lo malo es que entre tanto que se lee, uno se va poniendo exigente y cuesta encotrar lecturas que no pasen de ser "una mas" y para el olvido.
Bueno pues, hacía meses que no encontraba un libro que me enganchara y me cerrara tanto y en todos los aspectos. Está excelentemente escrito, con un manejo de los tiempos inmejorable, haciendo que uno no pueda dejar de leer.
¡que historía mas original!!
Me pareció leer en el foro que la autora ya está pensando en escribir la 2º novela. Ojalá sea cierto, creo que esta saga no puede morir aquí.

Este libro ha sido un gran desencanto para mi. Despues de leer El silencio de la ciudad blanca la cual me encanto, este me ha parecido una novela fantasiosa, sin buena base, historicamente pobre y romantica. No la recomiendo.

Me ha sorprendido, y muy agradablemente, esta novela.
Sinceramente, no parece la primera novela de una escritora. Está meditada, está elaborada y se lee en un suspiro.
La historia alterna con habilidad las historias de los protagonistas longevos con la realidad de los efímeros que les rodean.
Y a pesar de los flasback, no es una novela histórica. Y hay amor, pero no es una novela de amor. Y hay acción, y unas pocas explicaciones científicas... pero es más que un thriller.
No sabría cómo clasificarla, pero lo importante: me ha gustado. Sus personajes son elaborados, coherentes, cada uno perfecto y ajustado a su papel. La trama no decae, va ganando intensidad según nos acercamos al final y las piezas empiezan a encajar, y se lee con adicción. La narración es ágil, no aburre ni se pierde.
En definitiva, una estupenda novela para leer y soñar, y cuestionarse si querríamos ese don para nosotros, o si, como algunos autores de ciencia ficción han planteado, en vez de un don es una maldición.

I've been looking for a book like this for awhile!

I just received my copy of this book, and this book is amazing! I have purchased other books regarding tutorials and techniques for working in Photoshop, with the sole purpose of completing digital art. (Some of those books have come from 3D Total, the company behind this book as well.)

However, all of the other books have been written with the idea that the reader already has a good, solid understanding of how to work in Photoshop. The idea is, here are some tips and techniques to help one improve their ability and skills within Photoshop. This book is not like the previously mentioned class of digital art books. From the very first pages, the book starts out with basic principles and techniques on how to begin using Photoshop. You learn how to adjust the default settings in Photoshop and then how to setup your graphic tablet as well. From there the information continues, teaching someone how to go about using the tools found in Photoshop and eventually how to start creating one's own piece of digital art. There are even limited and brief sections on art theory and what makes a good piece, color, composition, etc.

After looking for many books related to learning digital art techniques, I am glad I risked the money and bought this book. This is by far the best book I have found for anyone looking to learn about digital art as a complete beginner.

Great purchase, not only for beginners

Received this book this week and I must say I am thoroughly happy with it. As I expected from the preview I've seen on 3DTotalPublishing's site, this book is not only intended for those just beginning to learn about painting in Photoshop, but instead presents rendering techniques valuable even for professional artists, like some of the artists presenting this book state(for example Kekai Kotaki from ArenaNet's "Guild Wars" and Daarken). Still, if you're looking for a more images-filled type of book this is not the one for you, since it goes in-depth providing a lot of written information and just the necessary amount of imagery. Each chapter of the main parts is written and illustrated by an artist who presents his own approach, but following the matter of study. You will also be provided with a reminder inside the book to download the accompanying resources for the tutorials in this book from 3DTotalPublishing's site(there you can also see a small format full preview for this book)

The book starts off with the basics: presenting the Photoshop workspace, optimizing it for your own needs and in accordance to your computer's resources, introducing the main features such as working with colors, brushes, textures, blending modes, how to establish composition, perspective and basic tonal values, using photographs for texturing or as matte painting bases, working with masks, wand tool, filters and more. Great insight for beginners and medium-level users of PS.

It continues with art fundamentals, where you will find a more in-depth presentation of what makes a painting good or great. Lighting, value, color, composition, perspective and depth, portraying emotions in your character or landscape and even storytelling. You will learn about the Fibonacci number and his "golden ratio", different types of perspective and much more. A very insightful chapter with extended text supported by just the right amount of images, as with the rest of this book.

A "complete project" chapter follows then, basically presenting you with the creation of a finished piece of digital painting using all the info previously presented in the book. Take it as a revision of some sorts, combined with an in-depth, step-by-step tutorial. Great for evaluating your own learning speed and process.

The book goes on to hands down type of practice, showing you how to create speed paintings dealing with SF character and landscapes, paint your piece using only tonal values of grays and only afterwards apply the color glazes, how to create a finished piece using elements of photos and combining them with digital painting - a technique known as matte painting, widely used in feature films' concept design -, and finally how to tackle fantasy landscapes, in this case an eery skull-canyon-like view overlooking a river and waterfall. Starting with this chapter and continuing until further you will probably see how the pages at which you find certain chapters don't coincide anymore with the pages given in the Contents page. Or at least that's how it is in my own copy's case.

The "Project overviews" chapter deals once again with step-by-step processes of different artists' finished pieces. Again the emphasis is more on text, but you get a decent amount of images also. Personally I appreciate the written part more, since it allows one to use the given techniques in his or her own way, without the pressure to make the final piece as likely in style as the artist's work.

"Quick tips" is an extremely well-made chapter in my opinion, presenting you with short and concise "how to" approaches on different tricky elements, such as trees, sandstorms, smoke, underwater, skin, make something look wet, all those detail things which make a painting come alive.

And finally the "Breakdown gallery" is the major eye-candy part of this book for those who were looking forward to it, you basically get step-by-step kind of tutorials containing only 5 images each - including the finished artwork -, so it's up to you to pay attention and observe since you don't get any text accompanying them. However, after a book packed full of text and information, you should be able to analyse and decipher what and how each artist used in every step in order to achieve the final result.

And that's about it. All in all a great book which offers you all the necessary information without cluttering too many pictures, allowing you to use the given tips in your own way and creating your own image, not just style-copies. Definitely worth its money and then some.

This is the most comprehensive guide to painting in photoshop that I have read thus far. From setting up your workspace, to learning the fundaments of design, to developing your own style; this book has it all. It even has a section for techniques for painting common things such as clouds, fire, grass, and metal. For the price it is the only photoshop painters guide. Highly recomended.

About the Author

Dennis Sparks has been executive director of the 10,000-member National Staff Development Council since 1984.�He previously�was an independent educational consultant and director of the Northwest Staff Development Center. Sparks has been a teacher, counselor, and co-director of an alternative high school. He completed his�doctorate in counseling at the University of Michigan in 1976, and has taught at several universities. He speaks frequently throughout North America on topics such as powerful staff development and effective teaching.

Sparks has authored Designing Powerful Professional Development for Teachers and Principals (NSDC, 2002) and�Conversations that Matter (NSDC, 2001), a collection of his JSD interviews since 1991. He is co-author with Stephanie Hirsh of Learning to Lead, Leading to Learn (NSDC, 2000) and A New Vision for Staff Development (ASCD/NSDC, 1997). The Jewish war, culminating in the siege of Jerusalem and the destruction of the Temple, can be called the most significant event in Roman military history. Lasting roughly five months it took four legions, twenty infantry cohorts, and eighteen thousand men supplied by four independent kings to affect a victory. In fact, the forces committed to the siege, were larger than those deployed for the invasion of Britain in AD 43.

The Jewish revolt was not inspired by any ideological objection on the part of the Jews toward Rome, nor any Roman anti-Semitism: instead a variety of underlying causes helped spark the revolt including social tensions, the divisions amongst the ruling class, the rise of banditry and poor harvests, and, perhaps most significantly, the apocalyptic storm brewing over 1st century Palestine.

All revolutions change history, whether they are successful or not, and the Jewish war against Rome in AD 66-73 was no exception - the ramifications were enormous and still have an impact on the world today. The revolt had a profound influence on the development of Judaism and Christianity. If this revolt had not occurred, two major religions would simply not exist, certainly not in their present forms. The other exceptional fact about the Jewish war is the extraordinary amount of information that has survived. For that we have to thank one man, Flavius Josephus, a Jew of Pharisaic origin and eyewitness to the events he describes. Born Joseph ben Mattiyahu, he held a command in Galilee during a pivotal stage of the revolt and was captured by the Romans. Eventually, through his skillful manipulation of events, he became a client and friend to the future Roman emperors, Vespasian and Titus and worked as a translator and mediator during the fateful siege of Jerusalem. To the Jews, he became a traitor.

Disappointing

I was very disappointed by this book. Basically, it followed Josephus' account, and while it might be easier to read "The Jews Against Rome" than the original, I wouldn't say it's an easy read. That's because the author gets bogged down in the details. This is not what history should be - a fascinating story. It's more "one thing happened after the other." There is no big picture in this book, which is a shame given the importance of this war both in Jewish and Roman history. Moreover, the writing style is obtuse and often difficult to follow. The author's over-reliance on pronouns rather than proper names forces the reader to often go back several paragraphs to understand whom she is talking about or what place she is referring to. (As an example, on the top of p. 47 she refers to "the city," but it's not clear which city it is.) There are lots of other problems in the writing, and editing, of this book. The author has a very interesting chapter on the battle of Jotapata, which gives the reader an excellent feeling for the reality of battles in antiquity. However, Jotapata is not included on the only map in the book! Then - after spending an entire chapter on this issue, she refers to it as Yodefat (which isn't on the map either). Other proper names also change during the book. Indeed the map and the text have different spellings of the same places, making it very difficult to follow. Is Joppa the same as Joppe (Yafo)? Why is Ashkelon also Ascalon?
The author consistently uses the verb "to fire" to mean "to set fire." I've searched several dictionaries and haven't found to fire as a verb in any sense aside that of firing an employee. The use of Anglo Saxon translations of Hebrew names is comical. The Jews are referred to by names such as John, James, Peter and Philip. I really couldn't help but think of Monty Python when the author paints a picture of James in ancient Judea fighting the Romans (all referred to by their Latin names). On p. 141 she writes about Alexander Jannaeus "who was known in Hebrew as Jonathan." Well, no. He was known in English as Jonathan, but in Hebrew he was known as Yonatan. The use of b. instead of "ben" (except, for some strange reason, in the case of Eleazar ben Yair!) is also strange. While this is often standard practice it only requires one more stroke of the keyboard to use the correct name. The author also confuses who and whom several times (e.g. the first paragraph on p. 47). Other times words are simply missing from the text (e.g. the first paragraph on p. 93).
There is so much that is unclear in this text. For example, one important sentence on p. 113 reads, "Vespasian then left for Antioch to deal with matters in Syria, instead of advancing west he moved his headquarters to Alexandria in Egypt and promptly cut off the grain supply to Rome." If he moved to Antioch how did he go to Alexandria? If he didn't go West how did he move his headquarters from the Levant to Egypt?
The author refers to Josephus' story about a mother eating her child (and offering half of the baby to a passing requisition squad). While the author notes that this story can't be verified I find it very surprising that the author says that it is "certain" that "such unspeakable acts were not uncommon." Really? Not "uncommon" that mothers roast their children? The author might have chosen her words more carefully and spoke instead of the desperation of the people faced with famine.
This should have been a fascinating read, particularly for someone like me who reads a great deal of Roman history, but knows little about this extremely important episode. Unfortunately, the author never makes it come to life and one must really ask where the editor was.

Fair and Balanced Account of the War Against Rome

I just finished reading Susan Sorek's short book: THE JEWS AGAINST ROME. I think this is an excellent easy-read about the war, and recommend it to anyone who is interested in a war that changed the course of history.

Ms. Sorek often analyzes the many conflicting accounts of the war in Josephus's books. She does this fairly and allows the reader to reach his/her own conclusions.

She also reads between Josephus's lines and examines many of the causes of the war, including class conflict, and the possible role of the Jewish aristocracy.

not for the novice

The title is a little misleading as this book is not really about the Jewish Revolt of 66-73 AD but about how accurately Josephus portrayed it. Since Josephus' Jewish War is the main source of information we have for the revolt this is an important question. A thorough grasp of Josephus' writings as well as some background knowledge of the period is advisable before starting this book.

Excellent Excellent Excellent set

I also have Cormen and Skiena, both are also excellent algorithm books, so it's good to have a sense of their various aims.

Cormen is an introduction to a lot of different types of algorithms.
Skiena presents a practical guide on applying algorithms.

Sedgewick is about very clean, easy to understand + memorize implementations of standard algorithms. I think the implementations in this book are some of the most beautiful and terse programs around. One thing that's initially a bit off putting is the sheer number of words that accompany each example, but I've found that the very in depth explanations are actually quite good ... after you've had some time to sit and play with the examples first. If you're willing to put in the effort, the text is actually really quite accessible. You do have to attack each example for a while before you start to feel like you're on the same wavelength as the author, but only because the material itself requires it, not because the text is difficult to understand.

This book isn't good if you're new to data structures. It was a required book for a data structures class and this is the first time I have ever regretted buying a text book. If you learn better by reading from the text, then you should look for another book.
